Have come home today to the wonderful news that my wife has booked a holiday cottage for the summer that has got 'some fishing with it' The cottage is on the south Esk and the fishing is described as the 'Balglassie beat' cannot find any mention of this beat on the Esks web site, can anyone enlighten me as to where on the river it is and if it is any good? we are booked in the first week of August. Cheers

It is a long time since I stayed at Balglassie or fished the South Esk in this area although I have booked into Balglassie for a late september week. The cottages used to be comfortable and always very clean. I used to fish the beat below Balglassie Farm which is owned by the club (Derbyshire based) of which I am a member. Approximately 10 years ago the main run of seatrout on this part of the river occured in June/July, although I am informed August is now the best month and there will be salmon running with a spate. Unfortunately the seatrout run is now much smaller than it used to be and this was confirmed in a recent T&S mag report on netting of the Esks. Although I have not fished it the Balglassie pool looks very good. A lovely place to fish and have a holiday
