Is it just me, or is fishing very quiet just now on northern rivers? I have fished the Swale and Ure recently and hardly touched a thing. April and May were pretty good, but the last 3 weeks I have seen hardly any fly life and nothing much rising.
And do fish enjoy taking the p...? Last Wednesday I spent 6 hours with nothing to show, at 3 locations on the Swale. The average fish here is 8 to 12 oz. As I reeled in to go home, a really large trout leapt right out of the water barely 20 feet away - it must have been at least 2.5 pounds! I know where you live, mate!

Big Sid is right, the Tyne needs some water if the sea trout season is ever to start. With so little rain and so much sunshine the rivers are very low and warm. A few trout have been rising to the sparse hatches of flies, usually late in the day when the sun is off the water.

Try hanging on till you can't see what you are doing. In June and July, I'd suggest 9:45 p.m. as the earliest time to even think of packing in. If the water is not too shaded by trees and if you can see the sky reflected on the water, near midnight would be about right for brown trout. richard

The Wharfe is fishing like a dream at the moment ! Plenty of hatches coming up late in the evenings at about 9.30 to 10ish. Bagged 4 nice browns above the road bridge at Bolton Abbey yesterday in the rain, using olive Klinkhammer with a small goldhead nymph tied Kiwi style.Had a two nice grayling the day before on a baetis nymph, the largest about 2.5lbs.

I was on the Swale again today and yesterday's rain has had very little effect. There were plenty of fish rising today, but nearly all small grayling. Like Dr Rob, I was using a Klink, but with an orange 'shrimp' (can't put a name to it) on the point. The faster runs are very thin, but took a decent grayling on the Klink. Usually, the shrimp is quite successful in the faster water, but not today.

Around the Durham area the Wear was up and coloured last night. water visibility was around 8". I reckon if we get no more rain today then it is easily fishable.

going to check the wear later on today to see if its worth having a trip out 2morro , no rain today so it could be settling down from its recent flood .

As a matter of interest - is there a rule of thumb about when a river is unfishable due to colour? I vaguely remember being told that if you stand in knee-deep water you should be able to see your feet.

the wear at croxdale is very coloured and quite high at the minute, it has been raining for most of the day so it will probably get higher. the forecast for the rest of the week is less rain so it should be in tip top condition around friday once the colour has cleared a little. so its off to a stillwater 2morro!
