Hi, can anyone tell me the correct method to test monofilament ?. I ask this as most of the line I buy seems to snap well under it's stated breaking strain. I test them by looping an end of line to my scales ( Avons ) then tying the other end to a weight matching the line and lifting slowly. I have tried Berkley Trilene XL and Vanish Transition, Shakespeare Omni 3000 and Ariel Pro, Lureflash Viper, Maxima, and a couple off of e-bay, the only one to snap at it's stated breaking strain or over is Maxima. Can all these lines be that bad or am I using the wrong method.

Hi 123jc In a recent test, I saw in a fishing mag Fulling mill Flurocarbon had a breaking strain higher than what it was suposed to be, a friend of mine uses it and swears by it. I'm a Stroft man my self

If you are tying knots to attach it to your test rig it will break at a lower weight. All knots reduce the BS, some more so than others.
You could try wrapping it around a fixed object, making the last turn cross over the others to stop it slipping and do the same on the hook of an accurate spring balance.

To attach it to the weight I tie a loop and pass the line back through it, I have also tried tying it to fixed objects and in both tests it usually snaps on the main line not the knot. I thought buying well known brands they would be a safe bet. The Berkley in particular was so bad at times it was snapping under half it's stated breaking strain.

How strange, have a look at this www.anglersnet.co.uk/authors/dave02.htm ;D Tip, always go for the line at the back of the rack, the front get sun damage. Maxima is always a spot on line, i use ghostline which is pretty cheap, at the mo im trying out zoo line £2.99 for 100mtr, im using it for furled leaders Im not tight ,Honest

is it that important the breaking strain that is. What might be more important is the diameter of the line. If you are realy concerned this can be measured useing a micrometer.

Most of he lines were only 1 or 2lb below there stated breaking strain, but the Berkley was breaking at times as low as 3lb and this was for line rated 8.7lb .22m and 7.2lb .20, also there fluorocarbon was breaking as low as 2.5lb, from memory this was for line rated over 6lb. Chucked it all in the bin.
