I'm in the process of setting up the new forum software - more on that soon.
For now I just wanted to get a sense of how I should set up the forum categories.
My instinct was to replicate what we have here, but perhaps there's an opportunity to update. In a recent thread Grouse commented that perhaps there are now too many categories. A fair comment.
I thought it would be best to get view from forum users - so if you have an opinion, please tick a box and let me have any other comments below.
Cheers,
Invicta

If we go for a reduction in catagories, perhaps rather than loose some, they could be combined, i.e. Tackle talk and rod building.

Keep those two separate, it will prevent people with no interest in rod building from having to trawl throught the threads, when they are looking at their next tackle purchases.

Agree with this completely. I'm not sure what the advantage of reducing the numbers of categories is at all. Why try to fix something that aint broke? I like the fact that the commercials have been moved to a "Marketplace" zone.

Why is there no option for "keep things as they are"?

Generally, in the interest of clarity and simplicity, I would be in favour of limiting the number of forum categories but this forum has grown to such a size that the turnover of posts, at least in the busier sections, is now very high and posts sometimes drop out of sight before they have fully run their course. I would like to see only minor modifications of the forum categories, as follows:
FLY FISHING FORUMS
General Fly Fishing Tackle Talk Fly Tying (incorporating Fly Tying Step by Step) Rod Building Salmon Fishing Sea Trout Fishing (replacing coarse fish on the fly) Saltwater Fishing River Reports/Updates Stillwater Reports/Updates Competition Fly Fishing Events Diary Photo Gallery Fishing Partners Viewpoint Admin Only
MARKETPLACE
Last Minute Trips Classified Ads
As in the above, I would omit the coarse fishing section, which can be covered in General Fly Fishing and I would replace it with Sea Trout Fishing, in which I am sure there will be great interest.
I would omit Casting Discussion, which can easily be incorporated into General Fly Fishing.
I think the Fly Tying Step by Step might be incorporated into Fly Tying.
I would omit Destination Fly Fishing, whatever that means, and would move posts in that section to either River Reports or Stillwater Reports.

Generally sound proposals by John Gray except for the Fly Tying Step by Step - the whole point of this section was to create an easy to find library for the step by steps instead of having to trawl back over pages of fly tying chat and guff.
I would also have no real objection to leaving them the way that they are.

Get rid of destination fly fishing. i posted a thread in general fly fishing which got 19 replies, it was then moved to destination fly fishing nearly 2 weeks ago and since has not had one reply. Invicta any chance of moving it back to the general link as i was getting a lot of usefull info, which i am not now getting. Thanks.

I would leave it as it is with the exception of "Last minute trips" " Destination Fly Fishing" Really do not see the point of these ones. They could easily be incorporated in another Though I rarely read it "Step by Step" is an invaluble tool to beginners & improvers so I would leave that as a stand alone category. Other one....Hmmmm Oh yes Compedition Fishing I would bin that one. ;D Tight Lines
