I was fishing my local river today - the Esk in Musselburgh - and came across two 'gentlemen' - who informed me normally fished Cobbinshaw which I believe is in West Lothian.
They sounded decent chaps and we had a bit of a chat before they left the water at about 2.30pm. I then met one of the regulars who told that 'those two' had fished the same pool I was in for the previous three hours. They apparently lifted over 20 fish out of the water and there was no sign of any of them being put back.
The permit - if they had one - clearly states that the maximum limit is 6 fish.
These fish were stocked on Wednesday night so what enjoyment they took from filling their ruck sacks with them, I don't know.
I just don't understand how these so called 'fishermen' can behave like this.
This a bit of a rant I know but it has really upset me. Our sport is going through a pretty tough time at the moment and this sort of behaviour is just fuel to the fire for the antis.
The Esk is in pretty delicate position right now. There was a good head of fish - wild and stocked - at the end of last season but a group of Merganser/Goosander and Cormorants has all but wiped the fish population off the map. Its a real shame because there have been some good hatches of olives this year and nowt rising to them.
So, if you were either of these people then please don't come back to our river. You are not welcome.
Rant over.
