After reading an article in December's Trout and Salmon about fishing in small streams, I wondered if there was any like fishing in the Glasgow area. I mean ,I was brought in the shadows of the Campsies and when reading this article I wondered if there would be any small trout in the streams that run off the hills. If so what would a novice require for catch and release. Thanks .

I've never fished it but people here in ireland swear by this river near glasgow. Its cheap and has a good head of trout and a run of sea trout and salmon later in the summer. theriverkelvin.co.uk/

Thanks for the reply, just started fishing last season and bought a ticket for the kelvin (£10 per season). I thoroughly enjoyed it though only caught 1 small brownie about 10oz, although I seen many fish leaping out of the water, including what looked like a sea-trout of about 3-4 lbs and a couple of salmon about the same weight. Just have to keep on practicing.

The Kelvin is a lovely little River. Very underated, but like other rivers you must spend time on it to get to know the right wee places to go. Have a look here as well theriverkelvin.co.uk/blog/index.php

There is also the river Cart , Gryffe , Carron , Endrick . All worth exploring , but like aliferste says you have to take time to get to know .

Thanks for the replies lads! Aliferste, I have enjoyed your site for a few months now. The reason I asked the question was that I seemed to remember from school( a long time ago granted) that guys I knew, spoke about fishing or sometimes even 'guddling' (is that the right word) for trout in the streams that ran off of the Campsies near the Crow Road or Campsie Glen but was unsure if it was a myth or a wind up, but the Highlander appears to confirm some of it is true. I can even remember seeing someone fishing the small burn on the left hand side of the road at Lennox Castle, just before Campsie Glen.

That would be the Glazert Water.main tributary of The Kelvin. The Fin Glen burn flows into it from the Campsie Glen Both have a healthy population of small Brown Trout. I fished it as a boy with worm & a 9"er was a monster. Must try it again for old times sake. In fact must get back to my roots one last time. Remember the Brock Burn which flows into the Levern Water & in turn The Cart. Once lost a Trout, must have been about 3 lbs & this in a burn you could jump across in places. Sometimes these little waters throw up surprizes as I have found thoughout the years if you know the places to look. There was a little burn that flowed down the glen into Johnstone. It had an outflow from a loch which the local angling club stocked. In the Spring you could catch nice fat Trout on Brandling Worm that were washed over the overflow during high water in winter into the burn. As I say it is there if you look. Tight Lines

I remember catching a brownie of about 2lbs on a set line in the smallest burn imaginable.
I was about 7 years old and wasn't allowed to go to the burn so I didn't know what to with it.
Like the proper little terror I was, I visited it twice a day until one of the big boys found it and took it home.

The things you do when a boy. God I did get up to some pranks. We were fishing a little reservoir which was part of the Barrhead Dams. The main reservoirs were the Balgray & Ryat. The fishing on them was "free" & quite the most beautiful trout came out. I fished bubble float & fly,did all nighters & started on "The Flee" there. Anyway the small dam,we called the Perchie as it was filled with Perch but now and again in the evening you would see rises that certainly were not Perch. Anyway we went up one morning & were fishing with maggot. Caught the usual Perch but on one cast I had propped my rod up in a hole on the slopping concrete. I wandered away only to be alerted to my rod "bent double" & a large fish jumping out in the dam. It went 2lbs 8oz & was by far my biggest Trout to date. I was "the man" that morning. Anyway the Park Rangers came down & took great delight in moving us boys on. One old guy noticed the poly bag with the tail sticking out & grabbed it. Making off with his mate he had my trout in his pocket. I must admit I was pleading with him to return it as it "was my biggest trout" Fell on deaf ears it did. Anyway as I got close to him he turned his back & do not know how I grabbed at the bag which was stick out his coat pocket. We ran & ran,I could see the stones they threw flying by us but luckily none hit. That we incident will stick in my mind forever. I sometimes reflect on bubble float & fly, maggot & docken grub. Those time are the making of a Trout Fisherman. I wonder about many that come in late to our sport, they never did the things I did. I think they lack something. Oh they may be very good at what they do,but they just do not have it. I guess some of us are just born that way who knows. Tight Lines
