I'm off with the family to a horse riding ranch for the last two weeks in July, the rest of the family will be horse riding, I'm planning to go fishing - is there anyone out there with Montana fishing experience - what flies, tackle etc?

Its a big place - where you gonna be?
Thats a good time of year to go - as long as the weather cooperates and it doesnt get too hot. Bring lots of sunscreen.
My experience is with northwestern Montana near Kallispell/Glacier area and the Yellowstone area. Its limited, but probably more than some.
In general, you'll want a 9ft 5-6 rod. Maybe bigger/longer if you want to throw wolly buggers at the bank - which are a great idea during the heat of the day. If I could bring one rod, I'd bring a 9ft for a 6 - but thats because I like fishing wooly buggers and big sculpins so much.
Definitely hit a local shop to get the lowdown on flies - there's just too much variation. I will say that grasshoppers should be a safe bet for much of the state at that time, although you won't find many up north.
Hope this is a start -
Mike

The ranch is called Rocking Z in Wolf Creek Canyon, nearest airport is Great Falls - is this specific enough?
