Can someone tell me please, is a kelt still a salmon or is a kelt a separate species of fish. I reported the catch of a small salmon to my club as per the rules, I am getting it in the neck at the moment from a guy who claims I am misleading the club as the fish was a kelt. ? John Lee

A kelt is a salmon that has spawned.

A kelt tends to be thin in the body and can have a slightly flabby feeling. It also has an enlarged vent and is often coloured (though not always)
Kelts should always be returned.

Kelts should not be counted in your returns.

Kelts should not be counted in your returns. Why should it not count? I assume that it would be counted as a fresh fish but not as a kelt, why is this?

in the words of the law it is a spent or out of condition fish and must be returned, as must a baggot or rawner.

Thanks for the replies at least i now know what is what, so me not being sure of what i caught and the guy doing the whingeing having not actually seen the fish himself I think I did the right thing in reporting it to my club as a catch. From your descriptions it probably was a kelt, I have informed my club accordingly and they came make theyre own decisions.
thanks again ...... John Lee

As well as the above, another sure give-away are the gills - a kelt's gill tend to be pale and probably show signs of gill maggots whereas a springer will have deep red gills. If you get connected to a good springer after catching a few kelts, you will probably know what it is long before you land it! Will most salmon anglers agree with that?
