Hi All
I am just getting involved in coarse fly fishing and I would like to know what flies I should be using to catch Bream, Rudd, Carp, Tench and Golden Orfe on?
Anyone heard of Raskelf? Bradford No1 AA owns the water.
I went fly fishing here some weeks ago and the Bailiff was checking our licences. When he came around to me he told me that i wouldn't catch anything just because I was fly fishing! How stupid is that!!!?!!!
I did tell him that I caught a nice chub on fly but he didn't care.
Any help on the flies would be of great help......Now I'm going trout fishing on my local river.

ArcticFox, don't be put off by what someone says! In fact now that you know what he's like, I wouldn't tell him what you're catching! Rudd, Dace and Chub, you should catch off the surface on small dry flies such as gnats and klinkhammers, maybe fish a small wet fly below it? In the book mentioned below a rudd is caught on a Royal Coachman, but I'd leep t simple and try the above! Carp, have a look at Carp Fly thread below there is plenty of good ideas there! Bream, Tench, etc, you should catch on red buzzers as bloodworm immitations, and weighted wet flies or nymphs fished close to the bottom, but they are hard to tempt. If you want to enjoy your fishing, then I'd stick to catching them off the surface where it's more exciting. I'm reading "The Adaptable Flyfisher" by Lou Stevens and its a reasonable read and not to expensive.

Sorry for the late reply I have been looking at other messages on this site.
Don't worry I am not put off by people what they say about fly fishing for course fish.
I went to Thorpe Underwood last weekend and there was a guy course fishing there, he had caught 2 decent sized tench
When he saw me holding a fly rod, we asked if there were any trout in the water, I said no, then he just laughed at me.....I just don't car what anyone says about fly fishing for course fish. Of course you can catch any fish on fly........etc etc....

yes m8 you can i was round at my local pond last summer testing out my new fly rod there were 2 or 3 course anglers there and they said the same "you wont catch anything with that in here" i replied to them that i was only testing out my rod,but to prove them wrong i put on a nice bug fly and after a few casts found myself hooked to a mirror carp! it was about 6 pounds, anyway the guys that were there said they might invest in a fly rod rather than sit around all day waiting for bites!

i only use a fly rod,i havnt tried fishing for trout yet but have had carp up to 16 pound on an 8 weight redington wayferer . There are 5 of us now that fish for carp this way , we catch far more fish than the tackle tarts and playing them is an unbelieveable feeling.Between us we had almost 30 fish on thursday night in four hours the biggest being 11 pound. I also find that a carp between 5 and 12 fight untill you have them on the bank , any bigger and they give up. Take no notice of the sniggers they will soon be asking all about your rod, reel, line and what you are using.Don't tell them anything!

ArticFoxFly,
You may consider this for a reply next time you are challenged or and attempt made to ridicule you...'What do the fish in this water feed on naturally, then?... suggest walking away before the reply?, I have had such remarks as 'Boilies' 'Maggots'.....yes my harse!!!, good luck its great sport.

I love summer evenings on the river. The dace are so quick, faster than any trout. I got in a real mess when I started but you soon get into the flow of things.
This is the only time I use a split cane rod, it just feels right, a lot more like being part of nature than some stillwater mud worn bank. But everyone to their own.
