when i have fished out the cast in boat or bank i often do a small rollcast into mid air just to tension the line before extending for the next cast.

Sounds like you are allowing slack to develop on the backcast, which is hitting the rod as you lift into the backcast.
Try keeping the line tight on the upward lift, accelerating smoothly,to a sharp stop.
Try and keep control of the slack with your hauling hand (your left hand if you are a right handed caster).

Dumpy, can you double haul?. It sounds to me that you can't and you are allowing your line hand to follow your casting hand during the stroke. If you do not DH then I suggest you keep your line hand still during the stroke, either hold it deliberately against your left hip ( if you are righthanded) or better still trap the line with the index finger of your rod hand. With a bit of practice you can learn to extend the line during false casting by easing the pressure on the trapped line on the stop and squeezing it again for the stroke.

Mike I do double haul, it may be I'm not pulling the line down on the back-cast as much and at the right time. A strange thing happened last time out fishing, i was casting OK,caught a couple of fish,i then cleaned the line with amorall wipes, that cause the me casting probs for about ten Min's or so until the line was really wetted, i then started to cast to rises, and having caught a few, i relaxed and had a bit of fun,my casting improved, the technique just came naturally.I think I'm concentrating to hard, and I'm to tight , to tense with anticipation ;D
