It depends what you are fishing with and where. As a general rule, the fewer false casts the better.
When using a head for instance, I dont false cast at all. One back cast, and let it go.
This does require a little practice.

Generally, if I'm casting my usual 20 to 28 metres (inlcuding leader) I'll do 2-3 false casts. Less if I'm casting at short range.

Best if you can keep it to just one or two.
Try to remember:
False cast to dry a dry fly.
Change direction of your cast.
Add a bit of length prior to shooting line.

I find it takes me a lot more false casts than this to get enough head out to get line shooting properly. Particularly if my retrieve has brought my line right back in. What can I do to improve this? Since learning the double haul this has improved greatly, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

I can understand what ur saying leisured-g, as this is also a problem i have. And why iam havinto make so many f-casts as i cant c end of line when retrievin So have to maybe make 4/5 false casts to get line out more so with sinker and inter-m as have nt a problem with floater. When i think about it could be even more than 4/5 more 4-6 being honest any suggestings and whats double haul till next time Macrickster (Ricky)

Since learning the double haul this has improved greatly, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. Shake the rod tip from side to side until there is roughly 10m of line on the water. roll cast this out, lift off and cast as normal. When you have perfected this, roll cast and keep the line in the air, cast as normal. This cuts down on false casts. Shake, Roll cast, Backcast/haul, Forward cast/haul/shoot line. It's all you need to do, works every time and is a lot easier than all that false casting. ;D

hi guys, a wee tip is to roll cast the 1st 6 to 8yrds then 1 or 2 false casts and away you go.a very bad habbit i see on many waters is to load your rod by letting your line land in front of you before your next false cast.scares every fish for miles and is a dreadfull habbit.but is quiet common.i also see many anglers have several false casts but not extend any more line its as if somebody told them they had to do it.the purpose of the false cast is to extend line to load the rod.berlin or bloke will probably tell me i'm wrong .but what the hell. ;D jim

When fishing a loch, either from boat or shore, usually one false cast. When fishing for salmon on a river or sea trout at night, usually none....... and I seldom use anything but a double tapered line.

I've made a small mark using tipex about 6 yards from the end on my sinker, seems to work OK.

Ricky, Suggest you borrow a dt line to suit your rod. I am assuming you are using a wf line, by the description of your problem. If you retrieve your wf line right in, as you need to if you want to fish all the water, you will have to work to get it going again. Do not be led astray, you can cast as far with a dt line, as with a wf line, or far enough for the distance to be negligible. So, borrow a dt or two to try them first. If your rod is rated 7/8 borrow a dt7, and a dt6. You could cast better with the dt6 than with the dt7. False casting should now be cut to the minimum. doonicus

Remember to shake the bottle before you apply it, or it can come of on other parts of the line (scrapes of easy with thumb nail when dry) , as long as you shake the bottle it seems to stay on for a few outings before you need to reapply it.
