Despite not being particularly competitive I'm keen to support Haul a Gwynts Charity day on Hanningfield (Essex). Seems like a good deal, and not too far from us... So, if anyone else in the area is public spirited enough to sacrifice a days DIY to go fishing in a good cause send me a PM, or add to the thread, and maybe we can share a car (I'm happy to drive as I have a dart tag thingy for the crossing) and/or boat (or leave the boat to the draw). Cheers, Kev

KevZim, I can do that date but would need a lift though. Where do you live ? I live in Crystal Palace but would be able to jump on a train to meet somewhere. Looking forward to your reply. Im only doing this to prove that i won't be grounded for 13 years Cheers Mark

Excellent. I'll have to tell the missus that I'm obliged to go now!!! Starsky, I'd be happy to pick you up if you need a lift... Crystal palace could be testing, but I'm sure we can sort something out (Bromley/Dartford/Bexley/Crayford???). Mind you - CP ain't too far off the '25 at daft o'clock in the morning! Be good to meet up. I think a few other Forum members are going as well, so it should be a good craic afterwards. Good to hear you're up for it Simon - how was the Russki trip? I'll pick you up en route if you like, no point both of us staying off the beer, and I have to go past Sittingbourne on my way up... Best start buying peach blobs then. Anyone know where I can find out about competition fly sizes? - post a thread I guess.

I found this on a site that may help. These are rules for a fulling mill comp on one of the Anglian Water reservoir. I have removed a few that dont apply... Im sure the comp at hanningfield will be a friendly so these rules may not apply..BUT.I dont now for sure you may need to check with Haul A gwent prior to setting out in the boat.
1. One rod, not exceeding 12 feet in length (3.65m) is to be used. Competitors may carry a spare rod, but only one rod may be mounted at any time
2. Matches shall be fished with artificial flies only. No fly shall be artificially weighted and gold heads or weighted beads are specifically banned. No more than four flies may be attached to a cast and these must be at least 20” (50.8cm) apart.
3. Hooks may be single or double. With doubles, the angle between the bends shall not exceed 90 degrees. Maximum hook size will measure not more than 5/8”(1.6cm) and the dressed length of the fly shall not exceed 15/16” (2.4cm) overall. No dressing is allowed that will artificially add weight to the fly. Modern materials are acceptable, but appendages that alter the original concept of an artificial fly (re formed plastic or rubber) are banned. A maximum of four hook points are permitted on any leader ie 2 doubles, 1 double/2singles, or 4 singles.
5. Anchors and drift control devices are banned. A single drogue may be used at competitor’s discretion with a maximum of 25 square feet, with a maximum of two anchor points
6. Flies will be cast in the conventional manner, with competitors sitting at all times, other than when netting fish. Flies will be worked in traditional loch-style manner. Any form of trailing/trolling is banned
7. The roly-poly style of retrieve is allowed
9. All electrical devices are banned, including fish finders. Mobile communication devices are allowed to be carried switched off onto the water, to be used only in emergencies or by prior arrangement by the organisers.
10. No boat may encroach within 50 metres of any other fishing boat.
11. No boat may land during a match other than in a medical emergency, or as specifically directed by the organiser.
12. All strike indicators must be a catchable fly.
13. Having caught your limit, please note and agree the exact time with your boat partner, who should then sign your card.
15. Foul hooked fish may not be weighed. A foul-hooked fish is defined as being hooked BEHIND the gill covers.
17. All competitors are required to hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence in England and Wales.

Brilliant, thanks Rad... best get the calipers to my fly box then. No anchors? I suppose no mooring to the buoys around the cages and using boobies on a bite alarm either eh? This compo fishing sounds tough eh? Sounds like it's fishing as it should be, which is fine by me. Lets hope i don't blank. Are you up for it then Rad? Cheers, Kev
