Hi all,
I'm new to Fly Fishing and this forum and don't feel very confident when out fishing. I've read many magazines and books but lack actual practice on the water. I was wondering if there is anyone nearby that would be prepared to join me one day for a spot of fishing at a local stillwater to give me pointers and ideas? I wouldn't expect them to spend a whole day with me but I'd be more than happy if they wanted too! Local waters to me are, Albury Estates, Frensham etc.

Are you able to cast ok? I'm near Leatherhead. I don't mind sharing a boat on Bewl Water with you.
PM me if interested.

Hi Spinks,
I'm in Aldershot so not too far from you. Drop me a line and we will try to sort something out.
Chris - I bet you didn't take your first steps at Bewl. Let the guy walk before running!
Cheers
Ben

Ben, the first place I fished was at Bewl. I fished it for three years before fishing anywhere else.
It is the best grounding you can get and it negates paying over the odds for pellet pigs. If you can cast adequately then there is absolutely no reason why you can not get your limit at Bewl. Find the fish and they will take the fly.

Hi Spinks
I live 2 miles from Frensham - if you want some company etc then PM me next time you're going and I'll see if I can make it.
Although Chris is a much better fisher than I, I would tend to agree with Ben in that a small still water may be best to stick to while you get more confident. Chris is one of the most passionate / dedicated anglers you'll meet and I think sometimes forgets that us mere mortals can get a little dispondent when we blank!
Actually Chris - You must PM me sometime as I owe you a shot on the river Wey at Frensham.

I don't agree with anything written in this thread but never mind!
There is no excuse for blanking at Bewl unless you are fishing in conditions which are obnoxious such as gale force winds when you have to seek shelter somewhere.
And just to make a point, I'm a no better fisherman than anyone, if you enjoy your fishing then you are at the top of your sport. I may be able to bash a stockie or two fairly quickly but it doesn't make me better than anyone else. Right, that's too deep for a Tuesday morning.
I'll be in contact about the river.
Cheers
Chris

I'm local as well and would welcome some company as I'm normally a solo angler. You may not want to fish with me though as I've blanked at Frensham two evenings in the past two weeks and thus can offer little in the way of useful knowledge!
Anyone interested in a evening there in the near future.

The offer of Bewl extends to you if you can face fishing somewhere 'tough'!

I'd love to fish a reservoir. So far as a second year fly angler I've not had the confidence to:
a) bank fish a reservoir as I'd never find the fish b) handle a boat and try to fish simultaneously

As long as you can cast well enough then it's not a problem. I'll handle the boat and do my best to find some fish!
Give me some dates and we'll see what we can sort

I'm with Chris on the Bewl suggestion!
He is absolutely right in what he says. You don't even have to be a good caster to catch from a boat at Bewl or, any other large reservoir come to that. All you need is decent conditions and patience.
I too cut my teeth on Bewl and it certainly is a great place to fish (that's why I have a season ticket there!).
If I was a beginner I'd jump at the chance of fishing with a competent angler in a boat on a large reservoir.
Blue Dun, take Chris up on his offer and even join the Bewl Bridge Fly Fishing Club (PM me if you want details). You'll get the opportunity to fish with some of the finest anglers in the country if you do!
