Anybody here from the West of Ireland? I am considering a move there, but would like some more info if at all possible. Just general info, housing, cost of living, apartment rents etc , and especially the fishing. Best bases etc etc.
Not the sort of stuff I can get on the internet.

Great place to live. I went over there last year and we had a great time. Fishing potential is huge. Cost of living cheap. Why am I still here? See my report at: www.fishcatch.co.uk/Irelandsea1.htmContact Kevin Brain if you need any more advice. Good luck.

Thanks very much for the info, that is what I was looking for.
I will see about taking a trip like yours as well, before I finally decide.

Mike What a great place to live in and fish in the West Coast is, I used to go there quite alot by the on set of a wife and a baby (- as much as I love my fishing I wouldn't swap what I got) I used to stay with a delightfull couple called Roy & Sorca Pearce that had a great place on the backs of Corrib. Their homepage is: homepage.eircom.net/~njp/home.htmIm sure they would be able to give you info about whats available - its also a great place to stay and fish from if you are thinking of doing a trip. Thanks Andy, I had a surf around various sites etc, and looked at Waterville. Sounds very good, but the property prices are a bit silly!
I will end up somewhere near the ring of Kerry, that is certain. I will have a good tour around before deciding.
Thanks for the input!

a good friend moved there about 5 years ago and i have been going 1-2 times a year to visit.
he lives near foxford in Co. Mayo, between lough's Conn and Cullin. and about 2 miles from the Moy.
its a lovely area and the fishing is very good. it took us a while to figure the loughs out (slightly different form at home in the highlands).
house prices are not too hellish in the area and there are a lot for sale (mostly new builds). the cost of living has increased a great deal since he moved. eating out has increased hugely, as has supermarket prices and fuel (although fuel is still much cheaper than here)

I regularly fish the Moy (over 5/6yrs) and have to say Mayo is a great base. You have not only the Moy but other smaller spate rivers which can be great for salmon and trout. You also obviously have the Loughs on your doorstep as well as the sea trout in the Moy estuary. I have never tried but I believe the sea fishing is good as well. We normally stay in Ballina itself and there are lots of B&B there. You also have Galway and Sligo not that far away and finally Knock airport close at hand. I would agree that it has become more expensive than it used to be but I still think the property is good value esp outside the bigger towns. I think as you talked about that it would be a good idea to visits for 2-3wkks to get a feel for the place. Hope this helps Easky (great river next door in Co Sligo )
