I've just flown in and out of Schiphol and it made me realise just how much water there is but how few anglers you see.
I have coarse fished Seeland and the North Sea canal but cannot remember seeing hardly any Dutch fishing. What's up - too busy getting over the whacky backy to get out of bed at the weekend ??

Hello,
For those interested there are some great books on pike flyfishing in the states. They also cover walleye etc, which are closely related to the Zander here in the UK.
When I lived in the US, nobody fished for Carp, they are everywhere, and huge. they often filled in a couple of hours when the bass were not biting.
I personally use 20lb mason hard mono for pike on the fly rod as a bite proof leader. Their teeth barely make a nick. Very easy to tie to regular mono as well.

The Hansome Stick, You clearly like tackle and fishing. I am curious why you stay in Holland. What bigger attraction keeps you there? Uskgrub ;D

Flyingdutchman, From an architectural point of view that is one interesting looking building design. Modernist, minimalist, industrial. Nice pike too!! Uskgrub... the handsomes sticks job is there!!

It was, as Ryan pointed out, a job move that got me here. The fishing tackle is a sideline for me rather than my main trade. I'd had it with London and, as living in cities go, Amsterdam is one of the finest. I walk or cycle everywhere. I have a boat rather than a car. It's very kid friendly. There's no commute. I live in a converted wine wharehouse on the water that is almost four hundred years old. All in all it's pretty perfect as city life goes. But I do feel hill and trout starved in the flatlands. Trout fishing for me usually involves a plane. Still, you can't have it all.

No disrespect to Dutch fly fishing but I will stick to Scotland thank you very much. That multi storey in the background does it every time. Tell me this why have you got the rod handle in your mouth? Tight Lines

I'm guessing to show it was caught on a fly rod? A bit better than having a spinning rod in your mouth!
Cracking fish by the way.

Hi HS
So you are English!!
After talking to you recently on the phone I was bemoaning to my wife about my lack of bilingual skills (schoolboy french and double dutch after a few) and extolling your perfect English for a Dutchman ( I did think you had a bit of an accent but not an English one)and how most other Europeans can hold a reasonable conversation in English. Anyway to make up for it I'm sure that your Flemmish is way better than mine which as I'm sure you have guessed is non existant.
Don't know if you have ever fished in Scotland before but if you ever fancy giving it a try just let me know. We have some great river fishing for wild trout and grayling and excellent loch fishing in some stunning locations with Ospreys et al thrown in for free and regardless of what Highlander says, we also have more than our share of multi stories.
Cheers Kenny

Nice fish, btw. Living near Zwolle, our surroundings are blessed with a lot of waters, in various kinds: Deep canals, huge rivers, smaller ditches, lakes, and some trout-fisheries. Ad Swier is one of my personal friends, and we have been fishing for pike together on many occasions. In Autumn his book on pike-fishing will be released, with a huge amount of info on this subject. I can assure you, we never ever fish without a steel wire, and the leader is usually a piece of nylon, stripped of our sea-reels. Approx 1 yard in length will do the job perfectly, even shorter if the streamer is bigger. the pike do not care. Hans.

Cheers Kenny I'll certainly take you up on that very kind offer. In fact I have spent very little time in Scotland and would love to fish there. Not sure when as I've almost run out of fishing tokens with the wife for the moment. (Ireland twice this year. The England this weekend and Italy next month) But I hope sooner than later. Very kind. And, of course, if ever you find yourself in Holland I would be happy to take you fly fishing for pike or carp. Richard

I will be in Holland next week for 12days. A water that looks promising is Dronte Meer. It is cleaner water than most and sandy shores. I had the impression it is fished from boats for pike. Does it have flyfishing potential? Are there any limits on pike fishing ie. season and methods. Regards Uakgrub
