Leven is stocked ?? what a shame. Years ago(60+) Leven trout were stocked in my local waters people then believing there were a superior strain of trout

yes leven is stocked, but still with leven trout as they strip trout from the loch at the end of the season and rear them on.

Leven is stocked ?? what a shame. Years ago(60+) Leven trout were stocked in my local waters people then believing there were a superior strain of trout I think it's a myth about leven trout being a unique genus of brown trout. They were even classified differently at one stage, but that's all changed now I believe. northdeeps

I didnt think they were completly different, they just had larger tails and white tips on some of their lower pectorals. People believed hereabouts that they were a prettier and harder fighting trout, and so stocked them to improve the local strain. Nice to see that however the stocking programme is used to keep the strain going. Corrib do a similiar stripping process where the eggs and milt are collected and hatched by man but only to the week or 2 week old stage and then they are put back in the lake around the islands. It has increased the fish levels over the years its been running, however while the fish numbers are there they are still bloody hard to catch
