I have just discovered this forum and read with interest the suggestions on how many fly lines. Some thoughts please on reel systems that people find effective in competition. And has anybody used the Masterline PowerHead Fly Large arbor fly reels. Are they durable and easy to change...under pressure? They seem cost effective!

Forget that Masterline reel, it's build quality and finish are shocking.
If you are looking for a good large arbor with cheap spools, check out the barstock BFR Modula 95, the diecast aluminium BFR Lamina or the Orvis Rocky Mountain #7/8, all similar spec as made in same factory.
Try and get the ones that were made at the BFR factory in Falmouth, Cornwall before Orvis closed it and moved production to China. There is still plenty British made ones about. Each come with three concept spools and further spares can be picked up for a tenner or less.

Rocky Mountain LA as PP says - cheap spools as well and very easy to change quickly.

Sorry PLG but the GRX and GTX are nowhere near as good a build quality and finish as the BFRs.

I found the Rocky Mountain to be oversized compared to other reels. Too big and too heavy unless you want hundreds of metres of backing.

I've got a BFR Lamina which is the same as the Orvis Rocky Mountain LA.
It's a good reel, but is quite heavy.
If I was in the position I was in before buying the Lamina now, I'd buy Rimflys and loads of spools. I don't feel that the larger arbor of the Lamina is necessarilly an advantage as I never play fish from the reel.

I have the GTX and find it a great real, spools are £6.99 and are interchangable with the GRX. Easy to change over and a good drag, but never use it much. welshy

I find the new Pfleuger Trions very good - pity about the flashy finish, for a bit more money the non-flash Vosselers are also very nice and have the advantage of a large arbour spool and a standard spool fitting the same reel frame.
I have also used Leeda LCs for years to allow multi-line choice and there is nothing wrong with them.
