Hi Melanie, welcome to the forum.
Ideally you should be looking for a 8/9 weight 9ft rod in 4 pieces for easy travel.
other than that its a question of what you want to spend - under £150 you are looking at Redington Redfly, Greys GRX or GRXi , Snowbee XS, and rods from Fulling Mill and Sportfish.
Over £150, the Redington CPS and snowbee XSP highly thought of, as are the likes of TFO and Orvis rods. At the top of the range you have the Sage Xi2 for £500 ish which is a tough rod.
I myself have been using the Redington Redfly for the last 3 years with no problems, and caught a few blues and lost even more.
all the above should be quite low maintenance, just requiring a wash in tap water after use.
I hope that helps.
Mark.

I take it that you are left side of the pond? Left... Or West!? If I was just starting out and fishing for Blues & Striper's (Stateside) I would go for the Redington CPS in a 9#. If you buy one from the U.S it''ll cost you $250 - and it's a real bargain. If you buy that same rod in the U.K you'll get ripped off... Simple as that!

I find it hard to beat an Orvis Saltwater T3 for durability. I use them regularly from 6 to 10 weights for blues, stripers, and false albacore. All in all, a 9 weight would probably be your best all rounder.

if it's durability you want have a look at the zero gravity, 25 % more durable than any orvis rod ever made before, therefor less likely to brake!!!

Garry Evans has a deal on sierra ti+ rods at the moment. I have two and they are very fast light rods and at under £100 a steal as they were over £230. They are 4 piece so might suit. Plus a lifetime no quibble guarantee. TobyM
