I know Orvis and Simms have flats boots but can anyone recommmend neoprene boots that the windsurfing, yachting fraternity use? I don't like the former and the latter is too expensive.

Wading in tropical waters on flats can cause serious injuries, coral is extremely sharp, and when stepping on it it will easily penetrate the shoe and the foot. Decent flats-sneakers have kevlar soles, intended to protect the foot. I know at least Simms have kevlar soles. Hans.

I've had a pair of snowbee for over 2 years now and there's still as good as new - good soles on coral, they don't fill with sand and they are not a bad price, but they do leave your suntan looking like you're wearing white socks. I got them through a friend of mine who has a small tackle shop, and he is very competetive on SWFF gear - www.thefishinghut.co.uk/monpaul

If not wading on coral the ones I use when traveling light are the short ankle cut orvis boots which will set you back about £30. This are just slip ons and the sole is the same as the Xmas Island Wading boot. I have had them for years, and they have even at a squeeze dealt with the coral in the Seychelles when I could not get my proper boots in.
On a recent trip I led out to the outer islands in the Seychelles one guy was wearing wet suit boots and the coral cut straight thru the bottom into his foot. He also got badly bruised feet on the rocks. Be warned, it is probably worth spending the extra £15, and they will last longer.

If your feet get wrecked it'll spoil the holiday. If your feet get wrecked on day one it ruin the whole holiday!

As I've said before, the Simms Flats Sneakers are first class. But you have to have faith, and wait till you use them in the water - they're truly awful on dry land, when you're trying to break them in.
