I would welcome advice from anyone that has fished for Tarpon with the fly; in respect of the type of tackle that is used. Specifically I am looking at what sort of rod length and line weight and any thoughts on the sort of test curve needed to control these beasties.
I am told that fish around the 25lb mark may be expected.
Thanks

Buy 'Tarpon on Fly' from Amazon, its the best book on the subject and a reality check for anyone setting out for their first Tarpon. A 10 weight (9ft) will be fine for fish upto 50lb. Don't skimp on tackle, these fish are serious. Fly rods don't have test curves, the top half enables you to cast a fly line, the bottom half for fighting fish. I would get a rod that has proven fish-fighting grunt (as opposed to just labelled 'saltwater' like many UK/European rods). Cheers

Thanks for the response John. I thought I would confuse with a request for knowledge of test curves as they are only normally used for coarse rods. Your reply in respect of required rod action confirmed what I thought that for these fish a strong butt would be required to play the fish so restricting the casting to the upper part of the rod.
I must come clean and say that this query is not for me directly but from a potential customer. I am trying to better understand the current approach with these fish and whether what has been requested is viable.
Thanks again.
