Seasons greetings to you all
I'm off to Gran Canaria again this January and was contemplating doing a spot of Saltwater flyfishing this time. I've just bought a pike flyfishing outfit - Guideline LPX 9' #9, Koma reel and WF 9 Floating Toothy Critter flyline. Is this outfit suitable for Saltwater fishing, and if so anyone know where and what to target in Gran Canaria?
Cheers
Mantog

There are carp in the mountain resies, they take floaters, my best is 28lb off the top. Its great stalking territory. There are several guides that might help get you on to them, the easiest for access is emblase de chiera. Sea fishing is a bit early for the tuna etc but around the rocks you might get the odd small cuda and mullet. as in mainland spain they frown on fishing in the harbours.

Get a box of dog mixer biscuits and a packet of bait bands roberts or fox that will cover you. jim

Hi Mantog,
hereĀ“s some advice for satlwater fly fishing right now in Gran Canaria:
Maspalomas beach: first and last daylight hours, you can fish for seabass (not big), spotted sea bass and bluefish (wire trace, remember)
In Mogan: Amadores beach, in the jetty is very good for atlantic bonito (sarda sarda) and some snall barracudas, because there are lots of preyfish. The best moment is in the first daylight hours.
In Anfi del Mar, in the jetty, there are bonitos, cudas and bluefish, as in the Puerto Rico harbor. Here in the harbor you can fish for mullet with a bread imitation, a small fly tied with white marabou or lambs wool.
Hope you fish a lot. Let me know
Cheers,
Jose

Thanks Jose, I'm staying at a resort in Maspalomas (Parque Golf) so I may try at last light on the beach. Do you live in Gran Canaria? Maybe you could drop in for tea, lol Does anyone know if my Toothy Critter flyline is ok to use in saltwater?

Hi Mantog,
I live in Madrid but have some friends in the Canary islands. I suppose that if you wash with fresh water the Toothy Criter after your holidays is enough for a good maintenance. Good luck

Check the Kona reel is saltwater resistant or else the phrase "Houston we have a problem" comes to mind

The line won't be a problem, but as Graham has indicated, the reel maybe. I think I'm right in saying the Koma is die-cast and could be prone to corrosion. You will need to strip all the backing off and give the reel a very thorough clean on your return.
