Do any of you Salties know if the Grx 9' #8/9 would be man enough for swff? Bass in this country and maybe even Bonefish, or is the latter just asking too much? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't use this rod, but know of others who do. It should easily handle anything you're likely to catch from the UK shores with ease. In fact, I reckon a 7/8 version would work just as well. Wind speed and the size of your fly will probably be the only thing restricting you using much lighter rods, such as a 6#!

My weapon of choice is the GRX 8/9 and for UK use would heartily recommend them. I do about 30 trips in the salt a year and apart from a chip in the varnish from falling A over T on the rocks it's holding up well. Use a #8 line with the 8/9 or a #7 line with the 7/8. With the deals around you can't go wrong and having tested out the ULG recently ( Clousered tip ), all I can say is well done Greys. Probably doesn't have the backbone to handle Bonefish though.

Thanks for your replies guys. As I suspected, a bargain for UK swff but something else needed for trips abroad.

If you're looking for one rod to cover the bases, as it were, then give Redington's CPS 8# a look over. It's not quite a Sage, but if you get one Stateside they're only $249. Over here you can change that $ sign to £'s... Middle-man's cut!
I've used this rod and can honestly say it'll be fine both here in the U.K, and the tropics for Bonefish. To a point it's the wind that'll dictate what rod weight you use, when fishing for Bonefish, not the fishes fighting ability. Although they are great fighters an 8# should easily handle most Bones. Florida being a possible exception as the fish tend to be bigger there.

If you are really worried about your choice of rod for Bonefish, check the one I used on a trip, a couple of years back, in the attached photo... Anything is possible! ;D The fish was about 4½lb and yes, it is an Airflo 8/9#

Would you take a rod with the softish action of the GRX fishing for Bones though Steve?

Martin If it was my only other back-up rod, yes. But I would always go for the fast actioned rod first. The Delta+ isn't exactly fast either - but it was better than not fishing, as I had broken my primary rod!

GRX's are half price at the moment too - so only a £5 more than the delta + which is very soft compared to my redington & ron thomson. & Steve why were you bonefishing in the dark Mark.

Steve, 4.5lb hmmmmm... Hey, John. It was a chunky fish of around 19" - And at least I got a picture! ;D Mark I caught it in the evening. It was light but the flash photography has made it look darker than it actually was.

Thanks again. Have heard lots of praise for the Cps, and being a complete tackle tart will now have to spend the extra money ;D

Guys , if you check out the www.ukswff.co.uk forum Steve the admin has Bloke 8,9 and 10# saltwater rods for sale at a very good price. If you want to see the review , check out last months (Nov 2005) Fly fishing and fly tying magazine. They said the rods were £399.00 but Steve has em on there for £180.00. Very good deal, theres also Voseller Titanium reels for £115.00
