snatcher, isn't that a low form of life that stands at the top of weirs and drops down a dirty big treble on 40lb gear, then trails it through the pool with the occassion strike/snatching movement?? ;D

Cothi, they are tied to represent a struggling emerger when fished ginked at the head on floating line. Completely ginked and pulled they are a wind blown terrestrial and as an attractor pattern when fished on intermediate or faster line. Sometimes i personally dont add anything and fish them as a drowning erm? Thingy? That works as they take on more water and start to sink slowly.
This is just my interpretation mate, no doubt others will differ. Hope you get the rough idea.

Why the curved hook? What are they meant to represent? Originally tied for Loch Leven to represent buzzers. As Tweed says, they can be used to represent a drowning thingy. Whatever they are taken for, on their day, they can be very effective.
