In this instance trust the reviews, Weaver vices are very good. I have the "SCOTTIE" and cannot fault it.

Have not seen it but anyone I know that uses a Weaver is pleased with it. There are many vices out there & all have their converts. So it is buyers choice, decide what you want a vice to be & go for it. From the cheepo Sunrise to the ultimate LAW & from every price in between. I use a cheepo Flymate. it has good design if somewhat niggling faults that I have since taken care off. I have a hankering for a new one & may well have a look at the Peak model though Kypemeister has a brand new Dynaking & it is very nice. Ones I would avoid are the Stonefly & the Danvise. Whilst the Danvise to has it@s converts it is a chunky looking thing & I would have thought that tying on small hooks would be difficult due to access to the hook. The American Renzetti is very popular Stateside but hard to find in the UK Tight Lines

Hi Velvet
The Ultimate 2 is the one my buddies and I started with. It's a well made vice, holds the hook very securely, and it's the one a lot of instructors recommend to tyro fly dressers to start with. Come to think of it, I know a lot of fly dressers who have never felt the need to change from it, and still have the same vice after 15-20 years.
I only traded mine in when I bought a Weaver Scottie, also a good vice. If this is your first vice or you are on a tight budget, don't hesitate, you'll get a good vice and your money's worth.
Hope that helps
Russ

Perhaps a little off subject but over the last 50 odd years the price of a vice has gone down in real terms. I had a 1952 Veniards catalogue. In it the price of a good vice was around 30/- and a top of the range not far off £4:00. Now in 1952 my father earnd £3.10/- a week. A vice then would have cost him about a weeks wages. These days a weeks wages would be much more like £385 on average. That would get you very near the top of the range with vices these days and the vices have progressed hugely in that time. Back on subject the Weaver vices are very good especially at the price but I don't see any "Ultimate 2" vice. Thr type 2 is very good. Especially at the price (£28). Their site can be found here www.scottierods.com/fly-tying-vice.htmlCheers Alan.
