I don't tie many lures. When I do, I use either cock hackles or marabou for the wings. Hackle streamer wings don't look that mobile to me, and marabou seems to lose its flexibility after a few outings.
I'd like to try modern synthetic materials for lure wings. I'm not sure what to buy as there's so many available. A catalogue I have includes:
Bodywool Poly floating yarn About 6 different types of Fritz Glitz Mosaic Lureflash mobile Crystal Hair Maraglit Holo G
Could anybody suggest a good winging material please ?

try tying in e few strands of a sparkler mix under your marabou as you will be hard pushed to get a better wing than marabou. this should give the wing a bit of body aswell as that sparkle effect in the water. you could also try dubbing the lures with litebrite synthetic dubbings, giving it a good rough brush out to give movement and wing with something traditional like mallard or teal. hope this helps.

X-Stream hair, Widow's Web and RP fibers make for excellent wings on streamers. here are a couple made with Ep fiber and X-Stream hair.

Thank you for the information:
Hametied, which colour sparkler mix do you recommend, or do you need a different colour for each of the basic lures I tie (black, white, orange and green)
Pacres, where do you get that type of hair from ? I've wondered about putting wings on a jig and using with a spinning rod on a river where pike fly fishing isn't that easy because of the depth and bankside growth .

kieth, silver would be a good start as it doesnt look out of place with any colour of marabou

Try this. Tie a lump of poly yarn to a hook and comb it out. Keep combing and it will change character. You will be amazed how much it changes. Now you know how to do it you can make wings from it. (Taperizing scissors are a good idea. Get fly tying ones or make lots of small snips over a short area untill you have cut all the way through. A tepered end to the wing makes them look a lot better.) I'll show you at Chatsworth if you make it.
Cheers Alan

Hows about this for a synthetic baitfish-fry pattern?
