I was asked recently for this old Dovey pattern that I thought I should share it with others that might not be aware of it.
Was first dressed by the late Peter Vaughan & as far I know is still in use on that River.I like a fly that travels well & this "shrimp like " imitation does just that.Very similar in looks to the Silver Invicta & may in fact be based loosly on that pattern.
It is a favourite on my beloved Loch Lomond & takes it's fair share of Salmon & Sea Trout each season on that water. It was a great favourite of the late Bill Mc Ewan,a fly fisher sadly missed on The Loch.
Captain Jack Hughes Parry swore by it & its fame soon spread to other rivers.
Dressing
hook: 10-8s std Salmon & Sea Trout
thread: black
tag: flat med. silver
butt: white wool or floss
tail: G.P topping(small)
body: med. flat silver tinsel
rib: fine silver oval
hackle (throat only) barred Blue Jay or in the larger sizes dyed blue Guinea Fowl (Blue Jay is a we bitty short in the web & as such is unsuitable for smaller patterns.Dyed blue Guinea Fowl is a good substitute
wing: Hen Pheasant tail,tied slim
horns: Blue Macaw or if hard to find, dyed blue swan or goose can be used.
Hughes Parry had a theory about the use of the horns. He insisted that they be tied in & set in such a way that they curved along the sides & curved just at the tips.He thought that as the fly was drawn through the water, the horns crossed & recrossed giving a more attractive action.Dont know if this is the case but whatever, this fly is a tried & tested one that should be in every Sea Trout & Salmon anglers box.
