My late father-in-law grew up in County Wicklow and used to fish the Dargle. I wonder if anyone knows of any fly patterns associated with that river. I have recently bought my wife a rather smart fly box and would like to tie a few Dargle or Wicklow patterns to stock it. Thanks for any help.

Not being Irish & not having fished this river I would not presume to suggest "flies for the box" Oh I could make an educated guess & be pretty near but why don't you contact a local site.I have found one for you that gives a few phone numbers for Tackle Shops in the Co. Wicklow area.I am sure they can give you a few local patterns.Hope it helps.....Tight Lines www.glenmalure.com/activities/fishing.htm

The best fly I ever heard of for the dargle was called the tickle stick " i stand to be corrected on exact name"- thankfully it has gone out of fashion and would not fit in any fly box.
Hook: Large 3 -10" preferably - try local butcher. Body: 8-14 ft stick , lash to hook with some thread. Wing: 1 Length of about 15 yard of strong cord ( 50 lb breaking strain at least , tied to hook.

You wont believe this, but thats the very fly my in law used to use - more outlaw than in-law infact.
