After reading the artical in Junes FF&Ft on the origins of the Diawl Bach I took a long hard look and the ones in my fly box. It struck me that I have tied them on every thing from Nymph hooks to sproat hooks and they are all a bit of a dogs dinner ( although they catch fish). I am hoping that some other tyers could reccomend a standard hook for deep and shallow fishing. I am guessing a B175 for deep and a B160 for top of the water. Any comments will be appreciated. Peter

I do not know if there is a definitive answer as there are now so many variations of the original and it would follow that hooks would be a personal preference and your conclusion seems about right. I also tie on TMC 2547 grub hooks for really heavy flies to get deep.

I like mine tied short on a grub hook,b110 to go deep or niche grub for higher up.The slight curve gives a nice buzzer/shrimp profile. Cheers Colin

Do you tie them with a tail and beard on the grub hook?.
I tried the traditional tying from FF&FT at farmoor to no effect, although the mood the fish were in a dynamite fly would have struggled. Peter

Pete , whats in your box is fine tie them on different weights and styles of hooks depending ,on where in the water you want them t o ffish . I do that with most of my still water Nymph patterns ,when I tie a batch ,a variant on size and weight can make a huge difference to your catch
