Oh,way back when I posted on Fish & Fly an angler was looking for a spider pattern that was successful on Loch Ard.He never did get a reply but it has been bugging me for months as I knew it, but could not recall the name.God I can,t even remember who asked.Well find it I did & here it is in the chance that he has "immigrated" with the rest to this board.
The Black Joe
hook:14-16 old nos. thread:black body:rear half bright red floss/front,black silk or ostrich herl hackle:black hen
Not unlike the Black Arrow, without the silver rib. Trout flies made up with either black or red in their makeup are usually good.Trout & Browns in particular like these colour/combinations. Add a hint of tinsel & even better sometimes. The Peter Ross is a prime example,as is The Zulu Looks like an early season fly to me & fished on the tail. Tight Lines

The Black Joe used to be one of my favourite reservoir fly's when there were black buzzers about and a bit of a blow. And yes your right highlander it does do best on the point and early season, but don't be afraid to try it at any time it very often came up trumps for me.

Ok since we are in the Trossachs for the meantime I will give my all time secret away,a fly that I started using on the Lubnaig that can travel anywhere for brown or rainbows.I use 2 on a cast at times for brown up on the Lubnaig and the fly itself is a great immitator of everything.
wet fly hook b170 etc size 10,12. thread ,,,,,,,black body,,,,,,,,,,,peacock herl body hackle,,,,,,,,natural red game with the black bar down the centre. head hackle,,,,as above. rib,,,,,,,,,,,,,gold oval tinsel or medium wire( give the rib 2 turns at the start to make a small butt)
The hackle can be oversize( twice the hook gape) and can be quite open turns and must be soft, not the genetic fine stuff. The fly doesnt look much to the eye but in the water it pulses and imitates any thing sorto hatching and buggy,my friends that I have taken on the loch have said that after fishing the fly all day they got over half their fish on it,which is not bad for such a basic fly that they have never seen before, they have used it elsewhere and reported good success, give it a try.I suppose someone will add a tail here or there to it of green or red or crest but in the meantime try the basic stuff and let me know how you get on.I know it works.

ps,,,highlander how is Whitemoss I have not been for a fortnight,I gave Jim Wright one of my buzzers to try that I got over 20 fish on in a couple of hours there,it semms to be the biz and dead easy to tie.It has been catching fish eversince ask Willie Mitchell.
hook ,,,,,,B100g or B100 size 12 thread...black from Sparton rib.........black hologhraphic mylar( the purple looking stuff) wing buds,,,,,,, 2 pieces of orange trilobal yarn the lot varniched three times.
TIPS tie the trilobal yarn in on the top of the hook and take under the eye to tie off, this will show most of the orange to the underside where the trout will be looking and feeding from,I cant tell you how well it works in words, the best thing is the rib nearly vanishes and blends well into the body giving the appearance of segments with the slighlest gling showing, make sure the abdomen that needs built up of thread blends well into the body.
