when I tie flies with bead eyes I always tie them under the shank of the hook. My reasoning is that if I tie them on top the fly will fish upside down.
I have noticed that most pictures in books have the eyes tied on top.
Does it matter? Opinions please

Gander,
Many (all?) of the beadchain eyes patterns are fished deep, and are designed to ride point up to minimize snagging on the bottom.

Cheers, Hans W Flytier, Firstly, it is great to see you on this new forum. Secondly, why didn't I think of that? What that means I suppose is that patterns with weighted eyes and flash backs actually have flash bellies. Undertails will become overtails. I'm going to have to learn to tie standing on my head. By the way, based on your advise in a magazine review of vices, and your postings on the F&F forum, I got myself a HMH Standard. Absolutely Superb. Many thanks.
