Datus C Propers' "Wingfly Spinner"
Originally intended to imitate trico spinners in the US but a good small "general" dry for me. Always lands the right way up.
dressing below is a variant I arrived at by using whatever was to hand out of sheer idleness.....
hook = #18 to #22
thread = very fine, colour to suit
hackle = long narrow blue dun or cream
body = dubbed very fine fur (I still have some dun underfur from Harriet, a much loved but long deceased persian X cat)
tails = 2 egg brush fibres or whatever stiffish fibres suit
1) tie in hackle at head
2) run thread down to bend
3) tie in tails as a split V
4) palmer hackle thickly/tightly down to bend & tie in
5) dub thread with Harriet hair
6) wind dubbed thread back through hackle toward head. As you do this try not to trap too many hackle fibres down and keep stroking the hackle fibres to a position above the level of the hook shank
7) tie off/whip finish/varnish head
8) trim off any hackle fibres protruding still below hook shank
What you should now have is a cross between a compara dun and a palmer with the body sort of "ribbing" the hackle.
It can easily be tied in small sizes.
It's very easy to see at distance.
It can only land the right way up.
It floats well, (what doesn't with todays' floatants?)
The fish like it.
It could be tied "upside down" (over to you Roy?)
Enjoy
