Am I missing something here. The loch has been well stocked. Off course it will fish well. It's bursting with stockies. Lets see all the glowing reports in a couple of months time. Cynical?......You bet My club water is "Fishing it's heed aff" It too has been stocked & everyone & their granny is catching fish. But hey they do not have to pay £30 +per day for the privilege. I must be missing something Higlander if you feel £31.00 is far to dear for 2 or 3 anglers to pay between them for a days fishing. Given that for your money you have a good quality boat to fish from and also have an outboard engine supplied. In todays economic climate thats pretty good value for money, The loch is fishing well not just for stock fish a lot of natural fish are also being caught for by.

I think I see both sides of this argument. Firstly, Highlander is right up to a point. Leven has become a shadow of its former self with boats queuing-up to fish relatively tiny areas of water to catch stocky fish. The fact that some wild/acclimatised fish are a by-catch of this process is by the by - everyone is fishing for stockies. Secondly, Scart is also right up to a point, but who wants to catch stockie brownies which float up to the surface when hooked. Leven has its problems no-one will deny but throwing fish at the problems is purely an economic response to what is an environmental problem - cormorants, lack of fly hatch, inadequacy of the spawning burns to function properly, etc., etc. I have been a staunch supporter of Leven through the years but even I am getting disenchanted with the present state of fishing on the Loch. If we get a good summer of curly-bum hatches then things may start to improve. Time will tell. A' the best!

In the national heat yesterday boats were spread over an area about the size of fitty and all boats had fish. I admit most were stockies but can someone please explain the difference between catching stocckie browns and rainbows? at the end of the day without the rainbows being stocked most other fisheries would be in the same boat as the loch. But i have to admit the triployds thst were put into the loch the first few years would be a welcome return. BB.

Crikey, is there no pleasing people? Now they're moaning that too many fish are being caught!
Where does this myth about stock fish come from? There is hardly a water system in the country that hasn't had intervention from the stock master at some point. Leven isn't stocked with brownies in the traditional sense of rolling a tank up to the waters edge and putting in a few tons of fish from brood stock like 99.99% of all other fisheriers. No, Leven maintains the purity of the progeny by stripping native fish and rearing the young in captivity before releasing them to the wild. These are exactly the same fish that we would be catching had they had ran the burns and spawned.
There is no doubt there are still a few unresolved issues, but I've said it once and I'll say it again: Loch Leven fishery's immediate priority is to get bums on seats and generate revenue. If it doesn't , the fishery will disappear, and that's a fact of business. If that happens, there will be no call for us to argue and debate the cormorant problem, the water clarity, or the state of the spawning burns.
Leven is fishing well and I for one think it should be shouted from the rooftops.

Northdeeps, you are right. Having followed this debate before I am very pleased that leven is showing some improvement and brownies brought on from the native stock is far, far better than just throwing in stock rainbows. Getting bums on seats will help things and in the meantime real efforts must go into cleaning the loch up and improving the natural spawning etc.
