I'm thinking of visiting this fishery outside Newport on Saturday. I haven't been there before and wondered if anyone has any experience of the place.
Thanks Mark

Have you tried Ynysyfro which isn't that far away, Mark? The back cast can be a bit of a sod in parts there but it's an old established water with a lot of natural food - good for nymphs and dries. I like a light set up there, 4 wt with a 4lb line as the fish are quite small - you don't need to bang a line out to the horizon as a rule. Buzzer fishing can be brilliant at times, it's a good spot, I've fished it for years. Worth taking a 7 weight for a rough day. I didn't realise this place had a web site until I looked for an image, here's the link - www.nrffa.co.uk/

Thanks DB. Never fished there before. Never heard of it before actually. It sounds very interesting and I'll definitely pay a visit one day, if not this weekend.

MarkH. If you want a good day out with some challenging fishing go to Cwm Hedd. It has a good mix of deep and shallow water. An island to fish off and even a wading area. The people are very friendly and the fish are excellent. I had a lovely six pound rainbow on Thursday and put back one of around the same size. If you go I hope you have a good day.

Thanks Stella. I did go to Cwm Hedd and really liked it there. The fishing certainly was challenging. Even though it was fairly busy I only saw 5 fish caught on the main lake in the six hours we were there and I caught 4 of those, which was nice. ;D They were all well conditioned rainbows from 2lb to 4lb. I kept the 2lb'er and returned the others. Saw a couple of things there which I'd never seen before:- Sub aqua Canada Geese - these birds were diving completely under the water and staying submerged for up to 5 seconds. I never knew geese were even capable of submerging. Two EA bailiffs checking licenses. The guy fishing on the peg next to me mysteriously disappeared when they showed up. Anyway, I recommend Cwm Hedd to anyone who is looking for a some stillwater stockie bashing in South Wales. It's far enough in the countryside to be quiet but only 5 minutes from the M4. The lake is big enough to be challenging and the fish are clean and full finned. It's very well managed and has a nice lodge which does a decent cooked breakfast. cwmhedd.co.uk/cwmhedd/index.htm
