I fish buzzers most of the time on stillwaters. Key thing is to read the water. Use a floating line, if the line is going to move because of the wind and you suspect the fish are feeding further down (e.g. It's early in the morning and it's cold) use a heavy carp hook type buzzer on the point to anchor the rest of your team further down in the water. Is the fish are bulging near the surface alter your point fly and maybe add a bushier dropper fly to hold the team up in the water. If you present the fly at the right time and in the right way you will catch trout after trout fishing buzzers. My other thoughts are use the right tippet material. There is nothing to compare with RIO powerflex plus (8.2lb for ressies), and fish as slowly as you can. The arm wrenching pulls will follow, guaranteed.

Some waters seem better that others for introducing oneself to buzzers and gaining the necessary confidence. I would pick a small stillwater for 'practice': Somewhere like Burton Springs or Big Well would be ideal. I am off to Manningrord in the morning and will probably split the fishing between G.B. Damsel and Buzzer/Daiwl Bachs.
Once you have the confidence sorted buzzers and nymphs will be ahead of lures on your list of what to try first.

Well, static buzzers on a 7ft 4wt at Manningord - Awesome! First fish of about 4lbs was great fun especially as I had applied a treatment of Michael Evans Cleaner/rePlasticiser before going out so the well greased wet line flew through fingers. The next take was spectacular, the fish took the bow in the line and ripped the rod around - saddly the leader was not up to the job 5lb Rio Fluroflex did not live up to its name and was snapped instantly (must remember not to use that rubbish anywhere near decent fish). The takes were best when no retrieve and only a very slight breeze: the fly size 14 normal hook with dark olive thread and thin holographic green tinsel - no breathers or anything so absolutely the skinniest minimal of buzzer . 4 fish limit weighed about 18.5 lbs with the best showing 5.5 lbs on very questionable fishery scales.
