Had alovely day on the kennett yesterday as a guest of a friend we had trout, a chub a roach, although the browns are stocked they are in wonderful condition. had a decent fish in fast water which took a good while to get up through the current, expected to have to hold it in the water for a minute no fear , gone the second it touched the water .There is also a little roe deer in residence along the stretch. Casting is quite difficult in a lot of places , water was pretty fast and had a slight colour in it Hatches were indeed scarce but the river is full of shrimp A lot of small male barbel were surrounding a very large female with a large chub at the back of the pool hoping to pick up stray eggs, Have been invited back when the barbel are in season to offer them a fly All in all a very nice day out

I had a rod at Marlborough for a season in the late 1970s. It was the first time that the stretch had been fished for a few years. Nothing but wild browns and slightly overgrown and definitely not manicured. Wild fish to 5lbs were taken (not by me) and the river flowed across the garden of the Queen Mother's falconer and on nice days all the falcons were out on the lawn on their weathering posts. See below It was exceptional fishing but greedy anglers who couldn't C&R meant that the first season was the best and it went downhill a bit after that.
