I have now moved to Derby! Has anyone fished the Derwent at Duffield or Matlock Bath on the day ticket waters. If so, are they accessible (I’m partially sighted) and what’s the fishing like?

Carsington,
Sorry I can't help you but I would also be interested in some information on these day ticket waters and I thought I would lift your query up the list again.
Come on guys help us out if you have any knowledge?
Thanks
Gary

I have just returned from a trip to Derbyshire and river fishing is very difficult to find on a day ticket! I ended up fishing Monsal Dale Fishery, £35 per day and it's a wonderful stretch of the Wye with some cracking fish but apart from this and The Peacock Hotel stretch at £60 a day things seem very limited! I had a look at the Derwent at Matlock and most of it looks pretty unfishable with 15' sheer drops into the river, not sure if you could get in and wade from anywhere but couldn't even find a day ticket available! Apparently Derby Railway Angling Club offers a season ticket for only £65 but these were all taken for this season so perhaps you should apply now for next year! If you click on the link below it will take you to an interesting page all about river fly fishing in the peak district, the info isn't great but will give you a few ideas to work on! All the best and please let me know if you find any more day ticket waters for my future trips! www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk/content.php?categoryId=1953

Thanks for the info. A friend who wants a day on the river has just sent me an article from 2003 about the Grayling fishing on the Whatstandwell stretch and it looks very attractive. Fairly deep wading though.
I have a DRAC ticket but the banks of their stretch are very steep.
I may well give the Whatstandwell stretch a try Carsington and if I do I will post some information. In fact I may just have a trip up for a look see.

BTW there looks to be some day ticket water on the Dove at Hartington as well! Tickets from the Charles Cotton Hotel on 01298 84229. These were priced at £15, 2 years ago.

After a quick recce of the Whatstandwell stretch I sent this note to my mate.
"It's not quite as wonderful when you get there but could still be worthwhile at £3. The stretch is catch and release and only about 1/4 mile long, weir at one end A6 road bridge at the other. Reasonably easy to get into the water but most of if it is deep and about 20 yards wide. It is shallow by the bridge and I could see some fish rising. In most areas roll casting is a pre-requisite. Part of the weir pool could be fished from the bank albeit a bit like sea fishing off the rocks."
The banks are free of vegetation where you can get down but a bit steep and slippery. The water could be seen to be clear near the bridge which is quite surprising given the recent rain.
I'm trying to find out more about the Hartington water onthe Dove.

There is a short stretch below Ladybower, at one time it was reserved for season permit holders, however it might be worth giving Alan Purnel a ring, 01433651254.

Matlock Angling Club owns the Matlock Bath waters and most of the river through Matlock, plus a few coarse ponds. Season ticket is around £40 and allows you to fish for grayling throughout the winter. The river is OK and the mayfly hatch will be starting soon with some easy fishing (hopefully).
I am a member of the DCAC which has some excellent fishing but is not cheap but I feel is still great value for money. We have stretches on the Dove, Derwent and Manifold as well as lots of still-waters for trout, and we get access to Foremark, Carsington & Ladybower as well as some good coarse fishing.
