Just wondering how the Usk Anglers are doing?? my experience is of limited hatches and the trout seemingly reluctant to rise( have had an evil downstream wind for more than a month now)- have only taken half a dozen trout on a dry this year, all the rest on nymphs, and yet the Grannom have started to appear this weekend, a strange start to the season! g

Hi grizzle, my brother and I fished the Brecon town water on Sunday its our first year there, there wasnt much of a hatch about even when the sun came out... I didnt think the water was that cold but my brother did. I managed one fish on a spider and lost about 3 others my brother determind to get one the dry failed. I realise that the £35 I paid for the season isnt going to get me much for my money, and this was varified by a nice chap I met who was fishing the fly as well as us, who said when the water is up a bit the locals come out in their droves and take all they catch and put nothing back with the exception of the serious fishermen. I really hope this isnt the case and I get some nice days up there without a toby coming past my rather large ears.
Apart from the 3 ton of dog mess we had to zig zag around, the river looked like it might produce some nice trout with some very nice runs going through it, but I think I will stick to early mornings there to miss the crowds. Glyn

Hi Glyn, Seems everyone i speak to agrees this season has started strangely, reduced hatches and the trout seemingly reluctant to rise!! usually thats not a problem. As for Brecon Town Water it does hold plenty of trout but suffers as does every Usk town water with popularity.....namely that they have been opened up as dog exercising areas hence the mountains of s**t and someone always throwing sticks into pools for Fido to fetch!! also when the weather heats up they get even more popular for swimming/picnicking also popular with gangs congregating to drink strongbow and p**s everyone off!!! But if you can put up with this the results can be had- The Welsh version of combat fishing!! g

I was in Usk on Tuesday and popped in to see Jean Williams, she told me that the previous day (Easter Monday) had seen the best hatch of the season so far, quite a few trout caught, lots of LDOs and a few March Browns as well but no sign of Grannom there yet.

A guide friend of mine was fishing the Usk yesterday and confirmed that the Grannoms have started to hatch.
Modified this to report a big hatch of Grannom at Usk today but no egg laying so fish not really onto them yet.

I heard one angler on Red Barn had over 10 today on the dry. Went out for a few hours this evening, there were some large olives coming off, but I couldn't get the fish to eat anything resembling them. Finally lost one, missed one and got one all on a Griffiths Gnat. T.P.

Had a cracking weekend!! Got into double figures yesterday fishing the Monument pool down to the croy, water has dropped enough to allow better wading access...........and after having spent a few hours at the vice have found that a cdc loop wing emerger tied to represent emerging Grannom Pupa did the business!!! even took fish cast down stream above a rise!!!.........rod raised to sink fly and then dropped back to allow the fly to pop to the surface..................brilliant sport!!!

Fished the Town Water yesterday ( Fri ) it was hard work, bit bright burned my beak and forearms to a crisp, there was a good hatch nearly all day flies everwhere but very little taking them off the surface..had one trout about 6/7 ozs on a spider pattern gave up with the dry fly... they were out to lunch.
