Just wondered if anyone knows of any rivers in SY that I could learn on? I've never fished the fly on a river, and want to give it a go. Not bothered if the river holds either trout or grayling, but both would be a bonus Thanks in advance

Try the Don at the back of the Owlerton Greyhound Stadium or up Beeley Wood Rd for free trout and grayling fishing. The Don at Rotherham and the Dearne between Rotherham and Barnsley holds good chub.

Alternatively you could try further up the South Yorkshire Don from above Oughtibridge all the way up to the source at Winscar Reservoir. Much of this is classic upland river trout and grayling water.
However, in order to enjoy this fishing, you’ll probably have to join one club or another, as I don’t think there are any day ticket stretches, though I’m a little out of date on that these days. I think one stretch near Stocksbridge is controlled by a steelworks club with a reasonable membership fee?
Quite a bit of the rest of the Upper Don was/is controlled by the Upper Don Fly Fishers. They had/have stretches at Wharncliffe, Oxspring, 2 or 3 lengths around Penistone and then Hazlehead. Lovely water, plenty of fish.
However, last time I knew, membership of the local S&TA was a prerequisite of UDFF membership, and there’s usually a waiting list to join the river club. Nevertheless, once these hurdles are overcome, the cost of a year on all this water is very reasonable, even when you factor in the obligatory S&TA membership. And as membership is limited and access quite difficult for the less active on some stretches, it’s probably not over fished.
I’m pretty sure there are members of the UDFF who also visit this forum. Perhaps one of them might be kind enough to help you out with some up to date information.......

I'm surprised you didn't mention the silver tourists Stuart The Stocksbridge / Deepcar / Crane Moor length was £25 last year and is now ready for renewing. That is about a mile and a half of small stream fishing for trout and grayling averaging about 9" long, with the odd chub to 2lbs and a smattering of barbel. I have the Secretary's telephone number if you want it. The Dearne around Adwick is also worth a look after June 1st as there are some large chub. It is either free or very cheap depending on where you fish.

Nah, I doubt the South Yorkshire Don is a viable Salmon fishery just yet Clive, at least not for a beginner to river fly fishing.
Another local river that is certainly worth a look for "coarse" flyfishing is the Rother. It has various stretches with promising fast, streamy, shallow runs channelled between beds of Rannunculus.
If the last couple of years are anything to go by, come 16 June there should be no shortage of rising dace, (and a few chub), around Whiston, Woodhouse Washlands and the Rother Valley CP, under the right conditions anyway.
A 7ft #3, tiny dry flies and a good pair of Polaroids should do the trick. I say “should”, because so far I’ve enjoyed watching them, (using Polaroids in conjunction with decent binoculars is particularly effective), but not got round to actually bothering to fish………
