Tango, I fished the Swale at Topcliffe above Boroughbridge - it was great - but we were trotting wasp grubs for chub and legering luncheon meat for barbel I may be incorrect but my recollection of the water around there was that it was mostly first class coarse water but not great for fly fishing. I have fished the Ure, much higher up at a place called Bainbridge which was absolutely lovely water. There was a DT available from the local pub, whose name escapes me but it'll turn up on google - and the pub also did a nice line in pork pie and chips. Hope this is of some use, aplogies if it isnt

Rose and Crown at Bainbridge - Greatest fish and chips I've ever had. Took a party of fishers and their partners for a long weekend. Fishing good but low water when we went in beautiful suroundings

Fishing good but low water when we went in beautiful suroundings Thats the place! You can also fish the river Bain as well - shortest river in ENgland or something. My fishing pal pulled a two pound brownie out 100yds above the confluence with the Ure. Go there Tango - even you weren't intending to The confluence pool is or was also a magic grayling holding spot!

Looking for info on fishing these two rivers near Boroughbridge. What clubs, day tickets, free fishing etc. It's all coarse fishing around Boroughbridge and the fly fishing on the Swale probably starts at Great Langton, Near Northallerton (DTs from tackle shop in Northallerton) and upriver from there. Very few day tickets on the Ure, except Bainbridge as mentioned above. I believe there are some day tickets for the rivers around Ripon - the Skell, Laver and Ure - tickets from Ripon Angling shop.

Tango, just make sure you dont go to the wrong pub! There is another one just downstream from Bainbridge which is as charmless as a morgue. My mate and I went there once on the way home. I am sure it was the model for the pub in An American Werewolf In London. After a miserable supper we made a hasty exit and on the way out, you could almost hear the locals mumbling "nobody asked them to come!", "stick to the roads, stay off the moors!" ...and whilst getting back into the car, drifting on the late night air, Oh Sweet J*sus ! ......the terrifying and eldritch call of a lone wo... oh thank f*ck it was just a sheep Alternatively you could drop Mrs Tango there and tell her its part of the Yorkshire Dales traditional country customs heritage tour

;D Somehow I don't think she'll go for the "Sit there and paint that scenery , I won't be long" line again. I could try dropping her off in the middle of the moors though. ;D

I fish the Swale on the Richmond AC ticket regularly and would recommend this stetch between Richmond and Catterick as probably the best of the Swale. Its about £5 a day or about £25 for a season ticket. The size of fish is not as high on the Ure or Wharfe, but fish are very plentiful; both Trout and Grayling. Also there are usually few other anglers and its lovely countryside. Fishing is good above Brompton on Swale, around Easby Abbey and at Great Langton. However, fishing isn't great when its a meter up and coloured as it has been for the past .. forever really. I'm just beginning to think it might never stop raining actually. Usually the start of the season is excellent on the Swale, but this year it's been a washout.
Your wife might enjoy Easby Abbey by the way, and Richmond is a lovely Dale's town with a castle overlooking the river.

Tigermoth Do you or have you fished Bishopdale Beck? It is near Bainbridge link: www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=393500&y=490500&z=5&sv=393500,490500&st=4&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&ax=393500&ay=490500 Just to the right there is a 'yellow' road, the B6160. Just wondering if you, or anyone else, has fished it? ....ArcticFox....
