Just back from a sneaky couple of hours on the River with two small wild fish taken below the Hatchgate followed by my biggest Whitewater fish to date a long slender fully kype jawed brownie with a spade for a tail taken from 'lunkers' which was round about the 3/ 3½ lb mark and would probably be closer to 4lb+ come the mayfly. From the smallest of rises came my biggest fish which gave a very good account of himself, took me downstream and round the bend towards the Hatchgate no acrobatics but some good runs and head shaking with the new rod bent in two and once brought to hand and fully recovered the fish shot of back to where he'd come from. The new rod is excellent, new line matches the rod very well, new super shinobi tippet is very good (and cheap) and the fly, well it was Ben's balloon caddis! Cheers mate I owe you a pint

Now you know why we call it "Lunkers". good to see the old fella back again. I was worried the poachers had got him last season. On Good Friday I got his smaller cousin from the same pool - a well conditioned two pounder.

Jon no pics as I'm avoiding the faffing about that goes with taking pictures and getting the fish back on their way ASAP, however the one in my head of the trout resting in my hands getting it's breath back is very vivid as is the one of his gills flaring and head shaking!

Fished on Saturday from the concrete pillars all the way up to the top weir and with fish now rising well and taking emergers confidently a good day was had. A good mix of wild fish and established stockies caught on Ben's Klinkhammer's (I've now lost both of them ) and a very feisty and well conditioned stockie from this years topping up taken from under the farm bridge who was at the head of a large mixed shoal of chub and dace. Good hatches of olives and grannoms and a few hawthorns starting to show all we need now is more water and the Whitewater will be in peak condition.

Well that was yesterday. Today it was like a different season and it was hard going. There was very little hatching off and the fish were not rising. I wanted to fish below the Hatchgate bridge but the equestrian types were out in force and all the lambs were being collected up. Someone has been busy with a chainsaw and removed quite a lot of cover from double bend. Really struggled to find any sport until I got as far a ‘dead cert’ and was able to stalk up to rising a fish. The CDC and Elk accounted for that one, a silver fish of 10”. For the remainder of the session I concentrated on this spot… And finished off the day with a pristine brownie of 12” or so.

Got out early yesterday morning (8am) , starting out at the second bridge (forgive me learning all the landmarks still) , managed a beauty just above the bridge , what looked like a wild fish of around 2 and half lbs. Great fight, amazinly beaitiful fish. Got two other smaller fish before heading back to the big smoke at 10.30 for lunch commitments . Really thinking about getting out there today , but from Ben's photo's not sure f the rain hasn't washed it out ?
Also met a guy called Andrew on the river , seemed like he had just fallen in. When I got back to the car park I noticed his car : a green 4x4 type Delica People mover reg No M540 URX was not displaying his car sticker ? What should I have done ?

Justin, Congratulations on the fish I'm sure it gave a good account of its self! The rain will have made little/ no difference and the River above the confluence with the Hart will take a lot before it becomes unfishable anyway! I wouldn't worry about the car sticker however you can always show who ever you meet for the first time your permit and ask then to see their's!

I very much doubt that the river, above the Hart, will be washed out. I think that the light in the above photo has resulted in an image that is a little misleading - if you look very closely you will see a splashy rise in the picture.

Dead pike? That is the first one I have ever heard of in the WW - wondered if there were any in there!!!! Saw a dead heron the other day. Did not know whether to be happy or sad.......
Visited the river on Friday and Saturday. Blanked on the Friday (pulled out of a nice wild fish and missed a couple of rises). Managed 4 Trout and a dace on saturday. One of the 4 trout I caught was interesting - it had really tatty fins and what looked like an infected area on its head (healing though). This made it look like a stocky. However, it had a white spawning stripe on its ventral fin and had really red spots and the coluration of a wild fish. I am sure it was a stocky - but find it hard to explain the spawning colours. The other 3 trout were wildies - the best was 10-11 inches and a jewel of a fish - taken from the pool in Bens photo.
There are a lot of rising fish now - the river is getting really good. I am off to the Pang in an hour or so - excellent!!!
Justin - what car do you drive? Is it a red hatchback? I drive a black mini FYI and my sticker is out of date 'cause I lost this years one :-)

However, it had a white spawning stripe on its ventral fin and had really red spots and the coluration of a wild fish. Was this fish in the deep pool immediately above the farm bridge? If so I think it's the same one I caught two weeks ago although the infection was so bad then I am surprised he's still going!

Yup - it was. The infection looked like it was clearing up though. I remember catching one last year that looked pretty bad in late april. I caught the same fish during the mayfly and it had completely healed. I toyed with the idea of killing the one I caught last year - in retrospect I am glad I did not.
