Well it is almost time and I for one cannot wait for the season to start. The Whitewater 2005 thread was a really useful reference for me and it helped transport me to the river when I couldn’t fish. I hope that this Whitewater 2006 thread proves just as valuable a resource.
The work parties over the winter have hopefully improved some aspects of the river for both angler and trout. If there are any new rods out there who would like to have a recce with one of the older hands post on this thread and I am sure that something can be sorted out.
Before the season starts there a few of us getting together for a couple of beers in Farnham. Venue is the Lamb on Thursday 30th March from 20:00. The more the merrier.
I hope that you all have a great season.
All the best,
Ben

Quite agree about the usefulness of the Whitewater 2005 thread. That's what persuaded me to join the FDAS in the first place.
Anyone had a look at the water recently? Is it as low as I fear it might be?
Hope to make it to the Lamb to meet you all on Thurs next.

Absolutely Ben!
Paul at the last working party on the 4th March the river wasn't as bad as it could be and with the forecast for sustained rain over the next week or so it can only get better although I think the opening weekend could be a wash out!
Cheers

Even though I feel a little like I've been cheating the closed season by getting on rivers to fish for grayling / chub et al., I'm still remarkably excited about the new season.
It's still a wee bit early to dust off the old paraduns and humpys, but I'll be a happy chappy to be up to my waist in the Whitewater next weekend with my 7ft rod in hand.
Anyone going to go straight for the dry fly on their first outing or is everyone playing it safe with the nymphs?
See you all next thursday.

Anyone going to go straight for the dry fly on their first outing or is everyone playing it safe with the nymphs? Certainly will! Managed not to fish anything but dries last season and had some great sport.

Yep indeedy - am back on for a Saturday morning start to the season. Can confirm that Friday night willl be a combination of Discovery Realtime, cleaning fly lines, stocking fly boxes and lining up a rod so as not to waste any time on Saturday morning... Sad? Quite happy actually...

Managed 2 on my first session of the season. The river was running a little high but quite clear. Loads of olives hatching but I did not see any fish rising. The wind was really strong and this made it rather challenging. Both my fish came in consecutive casts from under the farm bridge. Both recent stockies - the pectoral fins on both fish were extremely ragged. One was about 1lb and the other was probably a little over 1.5lb. The stock fish only went in yesterday so it will be a while before they settle I guess. Both my fish came on a copper john nymph.

Good day considering the conditions! First fish a small wild brownie on a PTN followed by two of the new stockies steadily rising during a "hatch of catkins"and taken on the dry/ emerger (olive klink).
As Jon said good hatch of Olives through out the day lets hope the new fish switch on to proper food soon and start looking up.

Ben should be out there today (Sunday). I had my first outing yesterday with Jay and also met one of the new members (name escapes me) who had a 9ft Sage rod and was about to be 'sportfished' into a 7ft outfit.
Great to be on the river again. Fished New Zealand style which as Jay pointed out, is not technically against the rules as stated in the handbook (phew!). I was monumentally hungover and fishing badly, so was astounded when a cllumsy fish managed to hook itself on the gold head nymph which was hanging off my olive paradun.
Good hatches of olives were evident and I was even more surprised to have a wee wild fish take the dry but managed to get off before getting it to hand just upstream of the pylons. I then took a stockie from the same stretch with a camera man and the farmers watching (presume it's for Meridian?). Working my way upstream, dead cert corner lived up to expectations with probably my best fish of the day which also looked wild - around 1.5lbs
Can't wait till next weekend

What a filthy day. Must have had 3 seasons worth of weather in just a couple of hours - and summer wasn't included. Met up with Justin and his pal Danie so gave them a quick tour. However there was a decent hatch of olives coming off, just below the copse, but no apparent interest from the trout. The river below the confluence with the Hart was filthy, so started from the confluence and worked upstream from there.
Bumped of a fish just downstream of the pylons and that was it. Blanked! Casting was a non stop nightmare and 'my' rod wasn't built to toss GH nymphs into the teeth of a gale! But it is great to be back in the Whitewater.....
Cheers,
Ben
