Fishing pretty well in spite of the cold, which is at least preventing all the snow up in the Cairngorms from melting too fast. There must have been nearly a hundred fish caught by now, seven to one of Willie Gunn's acquaintances alone.
Wester Elchies has 5, cf nil last year at this date, Delfur 7, Delagyle its first today.

Given the fishspey website suggests that only 400 fish have entered the river so far, that's pretty efficient cleaning up!

My estimate of fish caught was only rough and may well be an exaggeration, but it was certainly found by our mark, release & re-capture trials on Spey that exploitation rates were highest for the earliest fish and could be as high as 30%. At least the majority of these fish should have been returned this year under the Spey Conservation Policy, and of course my two were.
Willie Gunn has at last broken his duck and I am sure his first will have been too...!

Just spoke to my dad who has organised a party of 9 fishing Upper Arndilly and the Brae this week. Coudln't go unfortunately because of university work. They lost one fresh fish yesterday on the Brae but nothing otherwise except a kelt (the ghillie says the kelts are much higher up the river than usual). Very cold and snowy apparently but the low and cold river perfect for these lower beats so they should start to catch. Will tell you how they get on.

With 48 salmon to the end of April it's been Wester Elchies best start to a season since before 1990 (can't readily find the earlier records). The whole river has probably had 800 fish to date. The pattern has been pretty variable, Rothes also known to have done well, but Carron not specially.
I'm not the only person who thinks we are seeing a shift in the run pattern again, away from grilse towards springers.
