Greetings all,
I bought a small 'Leatherman squirt' recently to replace a lost penknife - the new item has a miniature pair of pliers - perfect for crimping barbs or returning bent hooks back to shape. Its also got a file which is useful for sharpening hooks, and the other usual gubbins.
It doesn't have scissors though. This is the trade off, its the pliers or scissors.
Whats the most ideal multitool out there for fishing purposes?
The best all in one, put it on a lanyard around the neck one stop shop for bank side work?

I got one of the Leatherman Wave's for Christmas, has absolutely everything on it:
Needlenose Pliers Regular Pliers Wire Cutters Hard-Wire Cutters Clip-Point Knife Serrated Knife Saw Scissors Wood/Metal File Diamond-Coated File Large Bit Driver Small Bit Driver Large Screwdriver Ruler (8 inch/19 cm) Bottle/Can Opener Wire Stripper Lanyard Attachment Two Double-Ended Bits
Pricey but there well made and should be good for a life time.

Looks like you should have got the "Squirt S4" with the scissors (but then you wouldn't have the pliers). I have used the baby swiss army knife for years - doesn't have the pliers - but then I use my forceps to crush barbs etc. Just looked at their latest range and the "Midnight Manager" looks like a good upgrade for me - same size as my old version, slightly heavier do doubt, but even a little light! - lists the following: Thin blade Nail file and screwdriver Scissors Ball pen Keyring Bottle opener with magnetic, Phillips screwdriver and wire stripper Bright red LED light Size 58mm, 2 ¼", 2 Layer May have to go for that. gb

I have a Leatherman wave with the add on hex driver kit. We had a discussion at work one day with regard to the smallest useful toolkit we could take on an aeroplane (pre 9/11) and the wave plus hex driver was our answer.
I thought I had lost mine and brought another only to find the "lost" one a few months later. I now keep one in my work bag and the other with my fishing kit. They are invaluable.

I've had a Leatherman Wave for about 5 years now, it is awesome, picked it up for $100 Canadian dollars ('bout £60 at the time). Used it to mend bicycles, cut down tree branches, gut fish, eat with, saw up aluminimum tent poles, remove a corn, de-barb hooks, mend a zip, turn waders into wellingtons, open bottles and cans, cut my nails, minor car repairs, strip down PCs, cut wire/cables, hammer nails and whittle a stick to make me feel like a real man.

Leatherman Wave every time, or if you need mole grips the Leatherman Crunch, or really compact the Leatherman Micra or pretty much any Leatherman.

I thought/think the thread is about the best "fishing" multi tool, as in the original post quoted above, especially the last line "put it on a lanyard around the neck". gb

You've got the idea Fishgb, I have coupled a pair of nippers with the Leatherman Squirt on a lanyard which has worked out okay.
Still, I'm sure there's a multitool out there with the scissors, file, and pliers in a small compact unit somewhere - and if there isn't one....well, I will just have to go down to the shed and think about it some more!
I have a larger mulitool but that would be attached at the belt, and thats no good in chest waders & gimp gear.
I had a Leatherman Micro - very useful on the river and on the bike, but had to carry bulky pliers for crimping purposes. No good.

Absolutely! I was hoping this thread would identify the ultimate lanyard tool. Incidentally - I have an Abel tool - but much prefer the better usability of my old tiny swiss army knife.......... There has to be a better mousetrap somewhere! gb
