I am very much a newbie to this fly fishing lark although I have been angling for 30 years. I'd be most grateful if anyone could help me with a few pointers as regards flies ?? I would like to purchase a general selection ( if there is such a thing !) that would do me for trout and chub/dace . If someone could reccomend me a few patterns to get me up and running I'd be most pleased. thanks in advance Dan

Hi Chris,
i'll be fishing on the River Salwarp and Warwickshire Avon for the chub and probably Lenches lakes for the trout.

Hi Dan,
I'm New too and there's just too much to get your head around, May I make a few suggestion or at least share what is working for me.
For dace/chub and the rivers, of course mayfly is coming so enjoy that but after you need some big bushy dries for the chub and I had alot of fun with Dace and a daddie(Dry) or a klink.
For Trout and lakes. Personally I start with a black marabou lure pattern.(I have a few) Some Damsel nymphs and olive coloured lures. Boobies are a great way to connect with a few fish at first especially with the colder days. I always have a few nymphs and buzzers(black/olive) incase nothing is responding to lures.
For me its been a learning curve to understand what and why they take. The more I fish the more I move to more natural patterns and away from lures and boobies but they have really helped me to start out and catch fish on the fly.
The best bit i've learnt so far is that the more I learn the more fly's I'm confident to fish and that's the key. Give the fly's you are most confident with the longest water time. The more time you spend changing flies the less time you spend fishing. Enjoy, Glynn
