I have pair of Patagonia waders and very nice they are/were too. I left them on our balcony to dry out and some little blighter of a tomcat fell in love with them and decided to give them a good spraying. They now STINK of cat pish. I am sure you may be sniggering at my misfortune but I need some advice. I have tried washing them in the shower to no avail. I am now thinking of sticking them in the washing machine with a non-bio tablet...will this destroy my waders? How hot can I set the machine?
Any advice gratefully received. My sympathies to any others who have been similarly afflicted.
p.s would anti-freeze kill a cat?

Mix it with some cat blood,think i know where u could find some....there was a discussion last week about waders washing and reproofing might be worth a look.

Orvis suggest a warm machine wash with an "additve free powdered detergent such as Ivory [Must be a 'Merican product]" followed by an air dry in their wader care instructions for their breathables.

Some of the NikWax products might be worth a look. They do a product that you're meant to use to wash your garments in the washing machine before reproofing them. Might be what you're after.

Go with a powder/liquid design for breathable items such as NikWax. If there is an extra rinse button press it. Low temp 20-30. I would advise using a laundrete washing machine as they are larges.

Put your washer through a cycle first, empty and without powder, to rince out any detergent from the machine.

Have you tried tomato ketchup on them? It's the standard cure for skunk sprayings so there's a good chance it'll work in this case. That or soak them in the bath with bicarbonate of soda.

Tomato Juice is actually very good. Soak in this leave then rinse off.
Mind you, wearing chesties all night on the river and drinking too much tea, along with fumbling to release the braces clips - my waders usually smell of my piss!

Have a feed of asparigus and p*ss in them while your in the river, that'll get rid of the smell of funky cat love, and you'll be warm and snug for a couple of hours.. an old surfers trick.  J. |

Works for me every time. |

First, Soak the waders in a tub full of water for a day or more. Then just throw them in the washing machine with no detergent at all. Run them through 2 cycles. That may well be enough and since you're just using water, there's no risk whatsoever to the waders.
That may well be enough. If they still stink, use a half a tablet of your UK non-bio detgertent.
I'm very dubious of using Nikwax type products on Gore-tex. Gore-tex (and other breathable materials) is not the same as other waterproof materials that depend on coatings to keep the water out.
Gore-tex never needs to be "conditioned" or re-waterproofed. If your Gore-tex is leaking, it's not like and old Barbour jacket that just needs to be slathered in wax again. It's leaking because there's a hole in it.
