My XP 6# cost 400euro all in, i made it up myself and i still think i could have got cheaper as i got taxed, maybe 340euro or less with out tax, that includes handle, rings, reel seat. And i love it to bits wouldnt trade it for anything. I dont have the experience of the bloke rods, in fact never even heard of one till i logged on here, i have seen the loomis and casted the stream dance (?name mightnt be right), and im very reliably informed (a main dealer for both) that the technology in the loomis is better than the sage but doesnt have the sages finish and overall look

You are paying for the name SAGE,HARDY ETC. Try a bloke rod. I have an XL50 9ft 4piece #6 and what a rod this is,The Hardy ,Sage,Loomis is not a patch on it. I have tried and owned all the above mentioned rods and I would not swap the Bloke for any of them. The Gem,Ultralite,TCR, have all gone on ebay but I am going to add to my bloke collection. Cran The whole brand X is as good as Sage/Loomis/Winston etc. has been going on for sometime (TFO, Echo, Redingon, Bloke etc.) but they usually aren't. There are however some great value rods out there. Once you start spending over say £150 on rod it becomes 'law of deminishing returns'. A £400 rod will not be twice as good as a £200. You buy Sage/Loomis to get cutting edge technology and the joy of ownership. As Jan says resale value is good to. If you just want a decent fishing rod get a £150 model. I don't understand people buying GLX Distance or TCR rods when they clearly haven't tested them out first?

Its all about what suits your casting.
Who cares how the rod looks as long as you enjoy your fishing.

Guys, What about Reddington? i have had a Red Fly for about two years , teaching the son to cast ,thought i would pull a flanker and buy something from the Car Boot , no such luck , last time out came the call , let me try your rod , and lo & behold after many frustrating months of shouting and hair pulling he throws out a 25yrd cast , like this rod came the well known comment!!! can you buy me one of these, shopped around and got him one for £64, two comments here in favour of Reddington !!even though they have been taken over by Sage , prices still reasonable.

i fish with a redfly too -10'6" 3 piece - and a 10'6" shakespeare XPS - its not about labels - its about whats good - i havent broken any blokes - just not my taste. my xp's cost less than £250 each - the 10foot xp i fish with was £260 custom built with titanium sic rings - the rings alone are pretty expensive - i know it will recover its cost on ebay all day long if i had to sell it - hopefully that wont happen anytime soon - but it is reassuring that the rods you own can be converted back to cash should there be an urgent need.
jrt nailed it above - test cast it first then buy it - i have two TCR's - they suit me - the 8 and 9 weights -i made the mistake of trying the 9 weight last year and realised it was just what i wanted - the feel is just stunning, which is unusual in a stiff fast rod. my standby rods are gold cups - $65 each on ebay- great value rods -good feel, nice fittings - i woudl be happy to fish with them if the sage got broken.

Having read through this thread, its evident that we all love our different rods as passionately as our different football teams. Like any consumer goods, there will always be aspirational items..Sage, Hardy, Loomis or anything else £500+. Equate that with BMW, Lexus, Mercedes... Whether the owner derives pleasure from the "label" or the rods performance is irrelevant...they enjoy the product and are prepared to pay for that enjoyment, its the same with cars. I own rods costing from £60 to over £600 and enjoy each of them on their own merits. This topic is way too subjective to argue on perceived quality or arguments about price. One mans meat.....................

Sorry, but I would not swap my loomis GLX - the Sage TCR is close but not quite the ticket for me. Have to confess that I have yet to lay hands on a Bloke - did have a winning bid on Ebay for a new Bloke when I got a message to say that is had been removed!
Like Richard I would agree that rods of all prices suit certain needs and situations. Oh! and for a new Loomis I did not pay £600 either - will not say how little or how either - I think 'Rip off Brittain' is the comment here - a new Loomis GLX including local V.A.T. is about 600 Euros in Belgium, so you would not even pay import duty and pay about £400!!

I've got a Sage XP, and needed a second rod. Bought a Diawa Wilderness 3pc 8wt new for £65. Lovely slim blank, nice handle, reel seat etc- casting action much the same as the Sage. I may be a bit tight, but I take as much satisfaction knowing I have a great rod for peanuts, than I do having a Sage with the fashion label attached.

Grouse Gatti is a name that interests me (Italian aren't they?). You very rarely hear of them over here. Have you any experience of their gear? Matt I have 3 Gattis as follows: FRHP 865-3TA (absolute peach of a rod, favourite dry fly rod) FRX805-3IA (also great dry fly rod, but more flex) FRH804-3PA (also great dry fly rod, but even more flex) Very nicely made rods, some of the best cork on a handle I seen in along while, the first two rods came in a leather covered rod tube, service has been great, I would say the best rod of the three is the FRHP 865-3TA - a real gem.
