Have just, almost, been ripped off. While looking on the web for some specific fishing items I came across "Mikes Tackle Shop" in Edinburgh that had all I needed. Went through the normal selection process, registered, chose postage rate, just about to click confirm when .......... low and behold our good old friend VAT appeared in the calculation :-( Instead of things being a little cheaper than elsewhere they were in fact dearer - so beware. Here is the e-mail that I sent to "Mike":
>>No wonder you APPEARED to be cheaper than anyone else .................... I have just wasted an hour of my life putting together a substantial order from you only to find that non of the costs include VAT!!
Nowhere does it state EXCLUDING VAT !! You have lost my order and will lose many more .......... you can't just 'tack' it on at the end and hope no-one will notice.
I will post on the forums to make sure others are aware of this "scam" and to ensure no-one else wastes time like I did this morning!!

I think Glasgow Angling Centre dont have vat listed on the item prices and add it on at the checkout.

Hi RRW35 that's not quite correct for GAC. Every item in their shopping section clearly states the prices are EXCLUDING VAT

Hi RRW35 that's not quite correct for GAC. Every item in their shopping section clearly states the prices are EXCLUDING VAT Regards Thanks for clarifying that. But why not just put a price in that includes VAT, it saves the buyer having to work out what 17.5% added on to the price shown will be? BTW, i was'nt putting the GAC into the "rip-off tackle shop" category. It was merely an observation from looking at their website.

Hi RRW35 I appreciate you weren't including GAC in the "rip off" category and I suppose they could put both inclusive and exclusive prices on which would be much clearer for UK shoppers. But the main reasoning behind the prices being exclusive of VAT is that they do such a huge amount of online business outside of the UK, and as you'll probably know if EU customers enter a valid VAT number at checkout the VAT is not added and if the customer is outside of the EU altogether then VAT is not added.

In the US all prices for everything are always exclusive of VAT which they add at the cash till. Takes a bit of getting used to but I think most Americans like to know how much tax they are paying on things, there would be a revolt if it was 17.5%. It can also vary from place to place, in California 7.75% in Orange county 8.25% in Los Angeles county and 0% in Oregon.

I've not had a lot of luck with Mikes Tackle Shop, I made the mistake of ordering before Christmas, a number of the items that were sent were the wrong sizes or models, so I spent a lot of time sending stuff back. They claimed it was because of casual inexperienced staff working in the mail order department leading up to Christmas. Some items I ordered never turned up and in the end I cut my losses and cancelled the rest. They were not good at communicating either, rarely returned my emails.
I will give them a miss next time.

I bet Phil Houghton is hoping that 'Mike' isn't the litigious type. I've seen his ranting on a number of forums.

Just wondering.
If ordering from the USA do I pay the VAT as well?
A lot of your shop have items we dont have in our shops!

It is a legal requirement that all retailers include VAT in their displayed / published prices.
Although seldom enforced this is law.
