I have been wiping the dust off my Hardy De Luxe Spey 15 feet 10 weight, which I havent used for some years now. I will be needing a new line for it. I will be fishing in some small rivers and tight places, so it must be a fairly short-headed line. Any suggestions? How about Hardys own spey-lines. Are they any worth?
Regards

I asked the same question just after Christmas and our own Willie Gunn recommended either of the Partridge, Ian Gordon or the Carron spey lines.
I chose the Ian Gordon line and I'm very pleased with it!

March edition of Trout and Salmon contained a review of Spey lines. Line of choice for all three reviewers was the Partridge Ian Gordon #10/#11 Medium Head. R.R.P. somewhere around £60 but a quich trawl through any of the better known publications or dealers web-sites should result in you picking one up for under £40 ... which is nice!

Although I think the Ian Gordon lines are excellent, they couldn't honestly be described as short head. The 'medium head' line that came top in the T&S test is 75' - quite long in most people's books. The review was skewed in favour of lines for big rivers, where casting 40 yards is useful.
The first thing to establish in choosing a line is how far will you need to cast on the rivers you intend to fish. For example, with a 65' head, you're likely to have about 30yds between reel and fly even before you shoot any line. There's little point buying a line if a significant portion of its head is likely to stay inside the tip ring - you'll be underlining the rod and hampering your ability to shoot line.
So if most of your casts are likely to be in the 20-25 yard range, don't get a 65' line. To be honest, for fishing small rivers, I'd have thought that a 15' rod was overkill, and a shorter rod might be more useful if casting space is restricted.
I don't have any very short head lines, so am not really in a position to make definite recommendations, I'm afraid. But for fishing in the 30-35yd range, if there is space to cast it, I would echo the recommendation of the IG 65'.

Swift/charlieH, Apologies, failed to spot the "...small rivers and tight places" bit - guess I should have gone to SpecSavers!

Better late than never. I forgot to say thank you for the answers I recieved. I dont know if this could be of interrest for someone, but I have bought a Loop Multi fly-line. It's a wf-line with a 42 feet head. The head is white and the running-line is yellow and very thin. It's a great line for both overhead and spey-casting.
