This is too good not to share. Giles over at the UKSWFF board came back from Singapore with a very easy and quick method for making your own tapered leaders in minutes. I did a drawing based on his instructions and have tried knocking some up. Very simple.. Here's how its done.. Cheers, Carl

Well there is certainly scope for interpretation there! I wonder if my "Singaporean Leader" will look like anyone elses!

Hi Chris,
Which bit isn't clear and I'll redo it.
Basically you get 2 or 3 meters of mono. say 10lbs. You double it over and start twisting each side so it twists together. Twist both sides the same way. Continue all the way down and then tie a knot in it to stop it untwisting.
Next fold it over about 1/3rd of the way down and twist it again in the same way. Tie this off with a figure of eight knot when you run out of line to twist.
You them have the top section of line which is 4 strands thick. The rest is two strands thick and you add tippet with a loop to loop connection.. They literally take minutes to make.
Cheers, Carl

I use almost the same technique to make booms for my droppers.

I have a few questions on this.
1. How well do they turn over?
2. Can you use different diameters of line to get different effects?
3. Is there a practical maximum length you can tie these to?
Cheers,
Adrian

Just tied one up in two minutes. If this turns over as good as it looks...........it's a revelation! Cheers Berlin ;D Col Should have said that best results when you remember to straighten your leader material first!

I have a few questions on this. 1. How well do they turn over? Extremely well 2. Can you use different diameters of line to get different effects? I used 7lb Double Strength and it was perfect. The thicker you fo the fatter the leader will be. The best thing about these is you can tie them up with regular tippet material that you have. Even by the river bank! 3. Is there a practical maximum length you can tie these to? Not that I can find. It used 1, 2 and 3 meters this morning in the office. You could make them any length you like. starting with 12 ft gave me a leader of about 4 ft. Cheers, Carl Adrian

Brilliant! ;D
How is the leader attached to the fly line?
How much tippet do you reccomend?

just use loop to loopat each end and you can use as much tippet as you like. You can even carry on with knoted tapers taking it down finer and finer each time

Carl, My mistake. When I first looked at the page it was blank. Having looked at it again it is clear and concise. My apologies.

Brilliant idea, so simple & i cant think why it has taken this long for it to be common knowledge!!
I made up & tried 2 lastnight and have been very impressed.
With a little fine tuning im sure they will be even better. Good turnover and also hold the floatant/sinkant very well.
Im sure there is a little bit of "Bimini Twist" theory behind the knot , anyway, thanks for sharing the Singapore with us Berlin

there was an article and drawings how to do this for big game leaders in saltwater fly fishing in may 2004 - the inherent stretch is good when playing big fish like tarpon and sailfish apparently - and its so easy
if you start with 25 feet of 25lb mono you get a leader about 8 feet long with great turnover and plenty of stretch - add a bite leader and class tippet if required and off you go
