The weekly fisheries report by the Shannon Fisheries Board reports that the mayfly are late. They are only just starting to appear on Derg and there are none yet on Ree and they are therefore more than a week later than normal.

Thanks Sewinbasher for the spot, I think the Duckfly and Olives were a bit late this year too so maybe the 20th will be bang on. Just hope the weather stays mild, dont want a good hatch ruined by blowing gales like the ones i saw a few years ago.

This was the report posted by the Shannon Region Fisheries board today. You will note that the fly is well up on Derg but nowhere else and a 24lb trout has been reported from Derg but as yet unverified.
It was a very changeable week weather-wise with variable fishing results. The Mayfly season has commenced on Lough Derg with some very good fishing reported particularly since the weekend, best day was Monday last May 8th. A good fall of gnat is expected during the week as weather settles. Not much sign of our little winged friends on Lough Ree yet. There were very prolific hatches of olives on Lough Owel but fish tend to be shy and elusive, at least for now! A 6lb trout was recorded on Sheelin, caught on a buzzer. We have received an unverified report of a 24lb trout caught on Lough Derg. We have no details yet as to the captor etc and will check it out for next weeks report. With the Mayfly season imminent on many waters, we'll keep you posted on developments. A few fresh run salmon were reported on the River Feale in the recent spate. Fisheries Awareness Week programme of events is presently being finalised and will be published in next weeks update TIGHT LINES!

is this the lough derg in pettigo or am i mistaken? Wrong one, WP, this one is the Shannon Lough Derg, Portumna or Nenagh would be the best base. Mind you, there's a nice head of fish in the Pettigo one as well, but it's acid and peaty so they ain't overly big

The mayfly and trout tend to be better at the bottom end of Derg, so Dromineer, Mountshannon, and Garrykennedy are good centres and a few good trout also come from Killaloe at the very southern end.
Portumna is at the top end and not so good for trout.

Just got this email today ,
Greetings everyone,
The Mayfly Madness has finally arrived and anglers have been enjoying the first of the Mayfly fishing on Lough Derg. The mayfly fishing should be up on all our other major Trout lakes by this weekend following the lovely warm weather this past week. There is very good Buzzer and Olive fishing on most of our Trout lakes anyway so the fishing is good, Mayfly or not. The good fishing for Salmon and Sea Trout continues with the Moy producing some fine fishing throughout the length of the River. English visitors are enjoying some excellent Coarse angling with great catches of Tench along with Bream, Roach and Hybrids all featuring in most of our angling centres. There was still some good Pike fishing reported particularly from the River Suck, and some nice Pollack fishing including a good specimen at Castletownbere in west Cork. I hope you get out soon to enjoy the best of Irish angling no matter what your preference in the sport is……. the fish are out there…..go and catch one soon,
Tight Lines especially in Ireland,
Paul
